Help me choose an OS

OK, list is such:

- Fedora
- Mint + Cinnamon
- Ubuntu Studio
- OpenSuse
- OSX86

I'll give 'em all two days then wipe and re-install with the next. Should be interesting I think. I'm already using Win8 and Win7 so I'm not going to test them :D

If you planning to test all, you may as well skip Mont all together, install Ubuntu, and add Cinnamon repo. That way you can test Cinnamon on Ubuntu, just log out and change the GUI to it.

Mint is based on Ubuntu so can use the same dep files more or less.

Only reason I go via Mint is because of the DVD Edition's extra's Like media apps so I dont have to install them after.
 
Go hackintosh - easier than you think - then use TextWrangler or BBEdit for PHP - I cannot even touch other stuff having used it for the last 15 years. Indispensable.
 
Back and on Fedora for the next two-ish days. Going to start setting up all the stuff I need (git, apache etc) and see how it goes :D

Fedora has changed a lot since the last time I used it (probably around 2004) so this should be an interesting learning curve.

That didn't last long :p I presume some kind of corruption in the installation media - within 2 minutes, I started getting Gnome crashes. A reinstall seems to have sorted it out though.
 
Heheh, thanks :) the Tweak tool helped as well. Fedora is usable, just will take some getting used to.

I think that given enough time, I'd probably be fine with it. Will see how the next 24 hours go ;)

I do mostly dev work in PHP/MySQL with my PC at home - not a big gamer so that's not really a consideration.

Choices as far as I can see are:

1) Windows XP
2) Windows 7
3) Some or other distro - not sure which are in the running yet

Pretty much any OS would work for what I'm going to be doing (aforementioned PHP/Mysql, music, some video) so hit me with what you got and what you think :P

Well.... I'd say do yourself a favour, save some cash and go open source since you development in PHP/MySQL:

Ubuntu or Fedora

@longhorn: Most of these are either open-source or I have a license for (win 7 etc)
@dablakmark8: I ran win8 for a while and it drove me slowly insane. Metro is just not something I can get used to yet and the whole thing feels more than a little rushed. Add to that the pretty terrible handling of dual monitors and it's a non-starter for now.

Maybe more than 2 days per OS then :p I've been busy OK? :D
