Sony Ericsson K810i Review (ongoing)

So, the time has come again to upgrade. Have a Weekender Contract so I am looking at the phones you can get free on that.

I would love to hear people's recommendations, preferably based on actually having the phone or having used it.

My phone is an indispensable thing for me, so if I am going to be stuck with it for two years I need to know it's a good choice :)

I currently have a SE K750i and am a bit of a SE fanboi...But I am open to other suggestions. I am basically looking for something similar to the K750 but with a bigger screen and a bit less bulky...

Been looking at the new SE's, like the K810 which seems not to be that great and has odd keys... the Nokia N73 reviewed here and 6300 reviewed here

New phone needs to have :

-Bigger screen than K750
-good camera capable of taking decent photo-size pics
-nice buttons that allow fast smsing( I sms a LOT)
-The ability to use any mp3/sound file as a ringtone and sms tone
-The ability to have a photo of a person come up both when they call u and when they sms you
-Battery life of more than a day with average usage
-Mp3 player with good sound from the external speaker as well as the headphones

What I would like as well:
-some built-in memory or at least a free memory card thrown in
-Fast CPU ( I find Nokias tend to be quite slow sometimes...)

Edit: Also I prefer brick-type phones as apposed to slidey or flippy ones...
Ya, I think that is about it. :)

I am thankful for all feedback in this endeavour ;)

Also, I am not some lazy sod who can't be bothered to check things out at shops himself of google. I have done all of that. I am just looking for advice from actual real people who actually HAVE the phones in question, not some sales rep with no clue at all.

:)

I have a k810, and must admit its a great phone...

Not much different from a k750, just slightly different keypad and bigger screen and MUCH better camera...

I will admit I'm SE biased and think the K series are just better than pretty much anything else in their class atm.

Sweet. I was looking at one of those...

Does it come with any kind of memory card or something?

I think it comes with a memory card... 128mb I THINK.. not sure, haven't opened up the phone to be honest.... But getting a mem card for it isn't expensive.. couple of hundred for a 2gb one.

Have you considered a HTC? maybe a P4350? its available on weekender..

+1 K810, very nice phone, looks good, easy to use, buttons are easy to press, 2" screen, great camera quality, xenon flash. Played around with one and I'm sure it has everything you need.

I was hoping to get one on my sh1tty Topup 135 contract, but I have to pay in R1800

It certainly does look like the best choice and the next step up from what I have now. I am worried about the buttons cos I sms a lot. I will try to check one out in the shops today.Problem is they often only give you those damn shop demos to play with which aren't real phones and are not on, you know...

128MB is not too bad I guess for some photos. The 2GB cards are nearly R400 at Cellucity so I guess I am not getting mine from there then :p

Will the memory Stick that I have in my k750 not also work for the k810?

Nope! The K810 uses the M2 cards. I doubt they R400 for a 2Gb.
Go for the K850 rather. Or the P1i!

He doesn't want to pay in, or did you miss that bit of the FIRST sentence of his post?

R400 for 2gb m2 is probably a bit excessive.. you should be able to get them cheaper than that elsewhere henry.

Your best bet, is to try get the upgrades list from a vodashop near you, that will list everything thats free, or the payins and you can make your choice from there.

Its possible to get it free. Depends how much he spends every month!:)

Err lol Henry wont get it cheaper, maybe online but not at any stores.
M2 is expensive even the Sandisk versions, hence SE make dual memory card slots in the K850... SD cards or M2.

Ok... enough with the being clever.... He's on a Weekender and wants an upgrade for free... do you honestly think he wants to upgrade his contract?

Ok... M2, 2gb is just over R400... if you hunt around, you can more than likely get it for less than that..

Thanks all for all the feedback.

I did extensive missioning around Canal Walk today before the power went out and looked at all kind of phones.

I was very disappointed with the Sony Ericssons as much as I love SE as a brand. The K810's screen is minimally bigger than my K750 and the phone seems big and bulky despite it's small screen size. Also not a fan of those buttons.

As for the rest of the SE current range, the buttons on them just went from bad to worse, I thought.

So I found myself looking at Nokias of all things! The 5310i, which I thought was more of a kiddies music playing phone looks just great to me. It is small, thin, comes with 2GB memory and the buttons seem decent. The only negative I could find is the lack of a flash for taking pictures. In all honesty, most of the pictures I have taken with the K750 at night have not turned out well, however, I have heard good things about the K810s flash...

There is also the Nokia 6500c which comes with 1GB internal memory that cannot be upgraded. It is also small, and very thing and has nice buttons and a screen about the same as the K810.

The 5310 comes with some lame bluetooth stereo headset which I can't see myself using much but otherwise it seems really good to me...

Any comments? :)

Interestingly, the review here says it only has a 1.3 megapixel camera whilst the one I looked at today seemed to be 2...

Also, it seems the OS is quite slow, which I would hate, a lot. But texting is apparently fast and good. Hmmm, decisions decisions..
