HI all you runners

This Saturday i'll be running my first race - 10KM.

Firstly i'm not at all fit, not been going to gym or exercising. So I need some tips from you on how to prepare for this race. I only have 2 days! Secondly i'm a sprinter so not sure how to run longer distances.

Also what to eat the night before and the morning of the race. Any other tips welcome.

Thanks!

Slow and steady get you there. Please come report how it went! I need to start running again :o

I know nothing about running, but should you even be doing a 10Km run if you are not fit, have not trained, not sure what prep is required, or what to eat, have never run long distance?

You may just end up injuring yourself. My 2cents.

i would strongly recommend drinking as much beer as possible the night before.
You're screwed anyways, might as well have an excuse you can use for not finishing the race

If not, i would strongly recommend getting yourself some very good shoes and alternate between a slowish jog and walking for the duration of the "race"

you make valid points. I'm going to run a few km's today and see how I do. If i don't think i can manage then i'll just enter the 5km fun run. I was initially planning on doing the 5KM anyway.

Are you serious ?

You might be able to do it, but do you have any idea how far 10km really is ?!

It's a lot further than you think, I promise you. When I did my first run, I thought I did 5km already, but in fact I only did 1km.

set yourself a target of for example 6 min per k and try to stick to that during the race. Hope it helps

come on guys, have some faith in me!

ok i think i can do the 5KM, that's like 50 100m sprints.

During the race you just hardloop dat dit kak.

EDIT: Hey, "kak" is censored anymore.

Jumping straight into a 10km race is not a good idea if you haven't been training for at least a few weeks/months.

If you're serious about participating in a race THIS coming weekend, (which I think is crazy) then I'd recommend going for the 5km, and don't try running the whole thing. Walk/Jog it.

2 days' worth of "warming up" isn't actually even enough for a 5km race. You should train at least 2-3 weeks with regular jogging and running, slowly working up from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 to 5km over time, allowing your cardiovascular system and your muscles time to get used to the extra load put on them.
Then you should do a couple of 5km races, while increasing your training distances to 6,8, and eventually 10km before you take on a 10km race. You can hurt yourself if you try to just suddenly jump into long-distance running, especially if, as you say, you're a sprinter and not an endurance runner.

10km is really not that far once you get going. Its going to be a road race right? What race is it?

What I like doing is taking it one street light or sign post at a time, so as to break the race up into many short sections. Just keep your concentration on something a short distance in front of you, once you pass that point find a new point to concentrate on getting past.

I'm not really interested in running as a sport on it's own. I prefer to run in other sports i.e play wing in our soccer team etc.

Just want to try this race to see what the appeal in running is all about. Thahe thanks, i'll do the 5KM.

It's the CSIR race in Pretoria.

This sounds like slow painful torture :P
