So I decided to give Adsl a try. I applied yesterday for the Telkom Simple deal and they informed me that they will come and do the installation on 1/10. Will at a later stage increase line speed if I'm happy.

Now I will have to get an ISP. I've been going through all the post about the different providers for the last few days. Now I'm confused more because I cannot decide which one to use. It seems like most of them have issues in some form.

1. Which of the ISP provides trial accounts ?
2. Capped or uncapped ? (I will require about 60-100Gb per month)
3. Which ISP does the least amount of shaping/throttling ?

Any other advice will be appreciated.

Trial Accounts:

Gridhost & WA for IS
@lantic/Vox for Vox
AH/Axxess for MTN

I would keep these just for testing purposes as these accounts often don't reflect the "real" accounts.

Best to go on an ISP walkabout and try them for yourselves.

Start with ISP's that don't have a calendar month cancellation policy:

AH, Axxess (MTN-don't recommend)
CW (Cybersmart-I would start here if not in EC)
Incredible Connection, Plugg (IS)

ISP's with 30 day notice:

WA, Cybersmart, Mweb, don't use Openfield (OW), Vox/@lantic.

Keep your line with Telkom until you know it's stable, then feel free to bundle to save money, personally, I don't think it's worth the hassle for those times you do have issues, it sucks when there is a middle man involved in following up on faults.

I prefer to deal directly with Telkom, for both line and as ISP.
That way it takes 1 phone call to get things sorted.

Telkom offers a month to month based account, where you can give 1 months' notice to cancel.

I would do this. But if you're a person who likes to shop around, why not?

Sorry, I have to add that I excluded TI because of 10210, I'm afraid to phone them incase they mess something up. Only if I have line issues will I log a fault online then call to escalate every day, just so there's no middle man slowing things down.

Good advice ^^

May I add, WA, Axxess, and AH offer FREE accounts, which will not expire and are great for emergency, or test .....

Stay clear OW as advised.

Equally, you will be advised on this forum not to bundle your line - I have done both, bundled and kept my line with Telkom -
and it really makes little difference - you still need to get Telkom to sort your line, its just cheaper bundled.

If you took the Telkom Simple deal you should already have a 10GB softcap account?

We do offer 7 day trial accounts.

If you would like me to arrange 1 for you then send me a PM with your contact details

Avoid Telkom ISP. There is a huge disconnect between customers and their ISP 'team'.

Uncapped has changed character quite dramatically within the past few months with heavy restrictions on gaming, torrents, streaming and anything that doesn't involve browsing. There have also been technical problems which they haven't handled well.

Was thinking about going Telkom. So who you with?

Cancelling shortly. The service is really erratic, so I'll also be asking which to jump to.

"Avoid Telkom ISP."

I don't agree with your statement at ALL. You may not have been happy with their uncapped account but I can tell you their softcap accounts are top notch IF not the best in SA. Just putting it out there. Its great value for money offering you uncapped data between 00:00 and 7am every single day and still give you great low latency and full line speed during the day.

I don't understand when people don't speak for themselves.

Just because it's erratic for you, doesn't mean it will be for the next person... There's a lot of variables to consider. PLEASE.

Thank you for the replies. Will try some test accounts and maybe some small capped accounts before I decide on an ISP.
