Help - new to Adsl

So this afternoon I requested Telkom to upgrade my line from 2Mbps to 4Mbps. They did everything over the phone. Problem is my line is still on 2Mbps. Is it suppose to be on 4Mbps immediately or does it take a certain time ? I did reboot the DLink after my call with Telkom.

Yeah it does not work like that any more.... I know back in the old days you just phone and they change the profile and its a instant speed upgrade but now they place a order and then Telkom Networks approves or declines your order. Once the order is completed the speed change should happen automatically. It sucks and I think they did that so people don't pay for speeds they can't get. I think its more applicable to 10,20 and 40Mbps but looks like they are also doing it for the slower speed guys too.

Thanks cavedog. The consultant told me over the phone that it has been changed to 4Mbps and I will be charged pro rata for the upgrade. Apparently I can go up to 10Mbps but because of my distance from the exchange they say that they cannot guarantee the 10Mbps speed.

Make certain that your profile is also 4Mbps. They sometimes forget to make that change as well and only figure it out when it's brought to their attention. From my experience, moving from 2 to 4, it took a couple of hours, but speeds were erratic. I called in again and my profile was still set to 2Mbps. After changing it to 4, all was well.

So they have to change profile to 4Mbps ?

Yes, although just reading cavedog's post now, I'm not sure if that's changed as he says. I only moved from 2 to 4 in February this year and they had to make that change. Can't say for sure if the procedure is different now, but if you're not on 4Mbps by tomorrow morning, I'd give them a call and just find out.

Thank you. Will check tomorrow morning and will phone them if it is still 2Mbps. It is just frustrating to phone, this afternoon it took 25 minutes to request the upgrade.

Also switch your router off for 5-10 minutes and try again.

I gave it a try but no luck. Will have to phone them.

You can log into the telkom website and check your orders there. If it shows the yellow spanner saying executing then you might need to wait for some one to actually complete the order. You can ask activations to do that for you or ask TelkomZA rep to complete the order. Once the order status is changed from executing to completed the line speed will change without even a router restart required.

Happened with me with a upgrade from 4>10 and 10>20 I had to get a contact in Telkom to complete the order for me because Telkom Networks department is slow due to the work load. I waited a week and it was still not completed but the contact did it for me in 5min.

I will have to phone them again. The problem is the account cannot be linked yet on Telkom website services because I have to enter the account number as well (which I don't have). This is a brand new line and was only installed on Wednesday.

Thank you for the assistance.

Ohh yeah I had the same problem. Had to wait for the first invoice to see the account number so I can link it.

So I did phone them and was told that the line was upgraded to 4Mbps on 6/10/2014. Line speed is still 2Mbps. Spoke to them again this morning and a port reset was done. Currently line speed is still 2Mbps. How long does it take for the port reset ? TIA

I am assuming you did reset your router as well?

Did you ask them to check your profile and make sure that it matches the line speed you are subscribed to, ie. 4Mbps ?

This is 1 reason why I dont trust speedtests. Getting this on a 4Mbps line.....which I was so lucky.
