Can get the following from eBucks store for approx. 5K (50000eB - currently reward level 5 and have sufficient eBucks) -> https://www.ebucks.com/web/shop/productSelected.do?prodId=200134025&catId=96595964

Is above a crock of ****e - I want to ultimately run Hula/Netflix, is this possible?

Second choice would be to take 50K eBucks and get R8.3K of Makro vouchers and get something suitable at Makro.

I appreciate yr assistance.

cheers

Currently have an aged 8 year old 74cm TV, that needs to be replaced :-) (sounds like a certain cheapskate thread and extracting maximum benefit!LOL)

Rather get a "dumb" TV with good res, specs and lots of inputs then use something like the WD TV LIVE or Apple TV or Roku or Amazons Fire TV or even a dedicated HTPC

+1 and would throw the DROID TV Android box into the mix http://www.avsupply.co.za/product_info.php/droidtv-media-player-with-android-422-and-xbmc-p-437

In terms of pure streamers the Roku is top of the pile and for versatility would go for the DROID TV, Apple TV if you part of the Apple ecosystem with the WD Live being strong as a media player. The Amazon Fire TV is showing great promise to overtake the rest but it's still very early in its development.

The DroidTV also has a composite output in addition to HDMI and will stream Hulu Plus, Netflix, XBMC, YouTube, downloaded files etc. on your current 8 year old 74cm TV. You could then decide whether or not it would be worthwhile to upgrade your existing TV.

The current TV is an old CRT that will be given to anybody that can haul the 40kg beast out (domestic has already put up her hand! :-)) Will the eBucks TV/blueray cut the mustard? Is it good value at 5K?

The only thing with a dumb TV that it tends to have less IQ features etc than one with Smart. I mean I like the Series 6 and higher due to imagine quality and it comes with Smart. If I drop to a Series 5, I get lower motion rates and who know what else.

Samsung should make a Series 6, 7 and 8 in RAW form - no SMART, no 3D, no speakers and just the essentials. I'm sure there is a market

It's 6 of the one, half a dozen of the other, if you can't find a dumb set with the specs you want and only a smart TV has them then you're probably gonna land up getting the smart set, then down the line adding some STB to add a function that the set doesn't traditionally support

Well that's what I mean - I would like to find a set with the specs I want, because right now it is only the SMART TV that have them and I'll end up taking. But I'd rather save money and get a stripped out version if they made it ...

The Sony is good - they just tend me more 20% premium over the Samsung. So even with the discount, you're probably not getting your full moneys worth.

My take? Virtual Makro vouchers and get a Samsung.

Btw - I use Netflix on an Apple T V(R1,299.00) and I have to be honest, it's a nice fluid interface and from what I've read about having Netflix on the TV, this is better. Some TVs are slow, clunky etc
