I've got one of these things that my father bought in the 90s just sitting here (film camera) and the 35-80mm lens. I think we have a 300 or 500mm lens somewhere too /

I know nothing about cameras or photography and wondered if it was worth anything - or just toss it?

I'll be honest and say it looks too good to toss :(

Maybe trade in on a DSLR at IC and get R1000 off?

Thanks!

I am not sure, but maybe the old lenses can be used on a DSLR?.... unless Pentax changed the mounting.

Judging by some prices, I should sell it rather than trade/toss.

Seems to be roughly R1500.00 ...

I just need to get a battery and see if it works ;)

R1000 is about what it is worth if someone is going to buy it (without the 500mm lens- you should hang onto that for your DSLR)- I look out for these cameras but get them just for the lenses as these fit on my DSLR. I priced them a while back at my local Photography shop.
I already have this lens so its no good to me and its not a nice lens for DSLR due to the 35mm wide angle. I have a 28 to 80 which is super for DSLR.

I use a ZX-30 if I'm in the mood to use film. Also have a MZ-60 which is a bit buggered - needs to have the shutter serviced but its not worth the hassle.

Also got one sitting in the cupboard with two lenses. Same camera tried to sell it got offered R300 so thought I would rather just keep it.

What lenses? I might be interested in the lenses.
Plus you guys can advertise on www.outdoorphoto.co.za - dedicated photography site with a classifieds section.

See this thread http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=153431

They are
A Pentax SMC PENTAX FA 1:4.5-5.6 100-300mm
SMC PENTAX-FA 1:4-5.6 35-80mm

Like I said in previous thread I have no use for them. I have looked around at adverts for similar lenses but couldn't be bothered with trying to put them in classifieds, so if someone makes me a resonable offer they can have them.

Ah thanks. I have the 35 to 80 and a 28 to 80 (which I prefer to the 18 to 55 kit lens) and a 75 to 300 so unfortunately the lenses won't add anything to my collection.

I took it in to a camera shop around the corner and reckons R900-R1000. He said if it was him, he'd trade at IC and get the EOS 1000D for R5999.

I bought new batteries, put them in it still said 'battery low' and refused to autozoom or rewind etc The guy tested the batteries and they were alright.

He said sometimes if the dead batteries had been in the camera along time, the camera may have a memory issue and only recognise the new batteries after a day or two.

Is that true?

Does not make sense... A camera can't have a memory issue with batteries - the contact points may be dirty or corroded from the old batteries - clean them with some fine steel wool and try it again.

+1

More likely the contacts are corroded. It may be worthwhile scraping them with a blade as well as making sure that they are making prper contact. Sometimes they need to be bent out a bit.
