I have been working for a year almost and have no tax number. How do I get one because I have no clue how to?

Your company must give you an IRP5 form - they must register you! Then, you register with SARS directly, and give them you IRP5, then they will issue you with a tax number. After that you register online for Efiling (www.sarsefiling.co.za) and then you enter all your slips etc. btw: your company can get in big **** if you pay tax on your salary, and they havent registered you. It is illegal to deduct tax from your salary if you are not registered!

Hope this helps :)

Income tax

Go here: http://www.sars.gov.za

Click on quick links
click on all forms from the left menu
scroll down to income tax and click the third option "MORE"
Scroll down to IT77 and download it and print it out
Fill it out and hand in at SARS or email to: [email protected] with a copy of a CERTIFIED ID, CERTIFIED latest bank statement, and your IRP5.

Im busy doing it now. After that, they should get back to you within 14 days with a tax reference number. Then you can register for efiling.

What do you mean by that?
If your company provides an IRP5 does that mean they have registered you?
My income tax number is blank, but I would assume I must register myself for that?

Has anyone tried e-mailing the tax number application to them and gotten anything other than a reference number? I've been waiting for a response for close to a month now and am located far from any SARS offices, so it would be ideal if this method worked

to register for tax you have to gross above R120000 p/a OR have two sources of income (eg. working and having a CC registered in your name) OR be a director / owner / member of a company/CC

I remember trying and if you are below the R120000 they won't let you register, not sure exactly why but that is the rule

the company is under no obligation to register you, they are simply deducting your PAYE and handing that over to the government, when you register, SARS links your IRP5 (submitted by your employer) and your TAX number to compile a return for you. That will get sent to you pre-populated (with the info from the IRP5) you sign and add in you legal deductions and you get a refund.

You can register for tax if you earn 60k or more a year, but you have to submit a return if you earn 120k or more a year

Its R60K . At < R120K you cannot fill in a tax form ( I just got registered and I doubled checked on that) but you still need your tax number !!!!

You need to wait for your IRP5 first, once you have that you then go to SARS with all the required documentation (ID, IRP5, payslip and Bank Statement with bank details -- very important) else you can use a company like I did (http://www.myfinance-online.co.za/) and pay them R200 to sort your k@k out.

Worth it to pay somebody as they just told me what documents to send, they stood in the queue and then sent me a week later my SARS number.

BUT IF IN DOUBT PHONE SARS ....

You or a registered tax consultant have to do it in person - no online or snail mail applications. (refer to the company in my previous post).

Thanks cbrunsdonza, going to try them out next week, I will gladly pay R200 to get this sorted out
