I have bought a slew of new hardware to build a new pc, and now windows doesn't want to install for some reason.

Asus P7P55 LE motherboard
I5 750 intel cpu
210gs nvidia graphics card (MB doesn't have onboard graphics)
1 x2gig ram (fully supported by asus) kingston
1TB samsung HDD sata
LG dvd writer sata
led screen and etc etc peripherals

Everything is brand new.

I connected everything perfectly and the system starts up perfectly also, i am fully able to enter bios and change stuff etc etc.

The problem is that I am trying to install windows Vista (dont have 7 yet) on the pc, but as soon as the setup files have loaded on the pc, the system resets. I have tried with Win XP sp2 and even Ubuntu lucid lynx. Same thing happens. only exeption is windows xp, when it has finished the loading of setup files, it gives me the basic BSOD telling me it has detected a hardware issue and has shut down the pc.

I've been through the process of elimination. changing things in the bios, updating the bios to latest with usb stick, loading bios defaults, disconnecting stuff, etc etc etc (sigh lol) .

The motherboard has a memory OK function so i know its not the ram or even the motherboard since everything works fine when i'm in the bios.

I've called a few other techies and neither of them could explain the problem. They are as baffled as me :(

Sorry for the bad typing.Hope some of you guys have an explanation.

Forget the motherboard memory test function - to use it to test memory is absolutely useless.

Rather download memtest86+ and run it.

I suspect you got some bad memory - as memory was the only thing you haven't swapped out.

Yip, try memory first - the feature on the motherboard takes a few seconds, memtest runs through it all properly taking roughly 15min per gb it tests. Though if there are errors they usually pop up quickly.

I agree with the posters above.

I also learnt something new about Transend ram.......

It has a lifetime warranty.

Got it swopped after 2 years without paperwork!

ok, got memtest thanx guys, downloaded the iso, got it on cd and its running now. I have no idea what most of those numbers are, but at least it seems to be doing the tests on its own. Its @ 48% now with no errors sofar, but seems to be slowing down atm, probably doing intensive testing now lol. Will post again with results.

Did you write the Vista DVD? I've had problems with a badly written copy.

Edit: Didn't read properly. Check if the antivirus is not enabled in the Bios. As soon as windows tries to write the MBR the Bios prevents it to.

Yeah, I used my backup Vista dvd first, then i tried the original, still no luck, also tried my xp original and the cd i got from canonical (ubuntu) all to no avail.

Checked the bios for an antivirus option, and it doesn't have one. and thanx for reminding me of that fact lol. completely forgot about it. Too bad it doesn't solve my problem in this case lol

Ok- the memtest86 has done 2 passes- Both with no errors. Should I let it keep on going?

Two passes is usually enough, memory is fine. Will have to think some more about this.... I dont suppose you wrote down the number of the BSOD error you could initially?

Nope lol- but i'm pretty sure i will get it again if I try to install xp . give me a few minutes and i'll post the error Archer.

Ok- got the BSOD again when trying to install xp. It comes directly after all the drivers/files are loaded and setup says '' setup is now loading windows''

Error :
*** STOP: 0X0000007B (0XF78D2524 , 0XC000034 , 0X00000000 , 0X00000000)

lol hope that you can decipher that because I sure as hell cannot :/

Could it be that Vista doesn't have the required driver for some part of new hardware he's assembled?

I usually just google the exact string ..

Ty changing the SATA Controller Mode to IDE and see what happens.

You may have done this, but my money is on RAID/AHCI HDD issue in BIOS. I'm not sure exactly what will be in your BIOS, but their should be an AUTO/ATA/Legacy setting.

*slow typing, grr ponder

Umm yeah thanks Evilstebunny. I also googled the string and found that it could be several issues according to THIS. I will go through all of them and see if i get it to work. Will post if results. :)

I would go with Ponder's suggestion.

Had the same problem with a new PC a while back and setting it to IDE or "NATIVE" should work.

guys - AWESOME! So far so good - I have previously changed the AHCI setting in the bios to no avail, but I just went through the whole bios menus and saw that theres 5 different places to change this to IDE/Disabled . I changed them all and XP didnt reset this time! I'm going to try and install Vista now and see if it works. Will post again with results.

btw : Would I need to do this again when I get Win 7 in a few weeks? Is this a ''windows doesn't have the driver'' issue like Evilstebunny said? Can I revert these setting back to AHCI when I have finished instaling windows and updates?
