Hi guys,

So I couldn't sign up with MWeb because I am not an sa citizen, dont have an SA bank account

I'm now Afrihost since yesterday and I'm really not impressed :o

I have a 4gb line from Telkom and using Afrihost uncapped 4gb.

Here are my results from speedtest.net on different channels
- 11 = 0.32mbps
- 6 = 0.21mbps
- 1 = 0.31mbps
- 12 = 0.28mbps

I'm using a Duoplus 300 router if that helps.

Happy to pay $20 via Paypal to anyone who can help me with this.

Thanks in advance!

what servers are you doing a speedtest to? Wireless signal should not interfere with your ADSL speed. Those speeds are probably all the same as they are not based on averages but probably one run.

I used Speedtest.net in cape town. Either way, the internet is very very slow. Should I try turning off the firewall on my router or anything like that?

Looks like Telkom has allocated a 384Kbs line instead of a 4Mb. I would phone them up and give them the stats on your ADSL modem and what speeds it is syncing at and log a fault. On a 4Mb line you should get a 1Mb minimum

This looks like your line speed is limited to 384 - Are you sure you are on a 4MB package?

I ask because you claim to have a 4GB account, which either means you are not on uncapped, or you do not understand internet speed terminology, and hence I can assume that you might have signed up for something you did not understand.

Confirm with Telkom that you have a 4MB line and with Afrihost that you are on a 4MB account.

What was your upload speed?

And what does your router report your sync speed at?

Wow telkom must like you with a 4gb line ! and Afrihost has 4gb uncapped ?
lol just kidding

Sorry, I meant 4mb

I'm not actually a computer retard like I probably sounded in the first post ;)

I'm on the phone to Telkom now and trying to find out if you guys are right

Well if it helps, my Afrihost was dead slow yesterday as well, which is not what i normally get. Maybe just bad timing ?

You should be able to see your sync speed on your router though.

Yup sync speed is important as it is a true reflection of the speed on the line and is unaffected by the ISP.

You guys were right. They've given me a 384kbps line :(

I hope it's easy to change. Been passed around about 5 different phone numbers so far.

Paul & Bullzeye, please send me your paypal.

They said they will try to upgrade it today to 4mb as that is what I have paid for.

Sorry to say this but welcome to South Africa, we have to deal with that all the time :(

I won't ask for money ( even if it's offered ) :)

After all, I'm sure everyone here has gained some help or knowledge from it, it's only fair that we share what we have learned ( the painful way ).

Glad you got sorted :)

I'll have the $20, time to start a company that competes with Telkom, Ill lay my own fibre and rent from others, Ill even help bring in a fat undersea cable.

I wont, of course, be able to supply FTTH, as it will only be a business product. Ill setup wireless link to residential consumers. I will offer awesome prices, better than Telkoms.

*someones nudgeing me*

oh wait wasn't neotel meant to do all that, guess Ill just leave it to the "professionals" then, keep the $20 your going to need it for bandwidth :)
