I wanting to put a family tree online

Ok, after lots of dilly-dallying, i'm still uncertain as to what i should do. Just not happy with what i've seen so far...

Then someone suggested i try this one. (open source)

Installation is here..
http://www.phpgedview.net/installation.php

It seems complicated (to setup) and not sure if i want to put so much effort into the above website (but perhaps once its up and running its easy??)

Then i need a host, which i'll use texo. Can someone give me a rough cost as to what this hosting would cost.

I'll be getting my own domain (.com), but thankfully i havent regestered it yet, as i think i'm going with another name...

I'm not a indecisive person, but this website thing has really brought the worsed out in me.

Seems as though i upload files to <www.mydomain.com> which is hosted by <whomever i use>. But then where do i upload them - to some link that the host gives or how does it work.

Hey there.

No idea about that family tree source code. No idea that it even existed.

The Texo hosting packages & costs are here:

http://www.texo.co.za/all-in-one-hosting.html

And as to what to do when you get your domain, and how to upload your stuff:

1. Your host will give you your FTP details to log in and add or remove files. This is usually ftp.domainname.com , and they will give you a username and password.

2. What you need then is an FTP manager. Everyone has their favourite, mine is FileZilla. You can get it here: http://filezilla-project.org/download.php

Install the program, then insert the user name and password along with the ftp address and you're ready to go. It's easy to use, all you have to do is drag and drop the files that you want on your site.

Any other issues I'm pretty sure that Texo can solve with you. They must have a support department. They should also be able to install your family tree program as well!

Hi Boodles,

It looks pretty simple to set up - I doubt you'll have any issues. The primary concern for me though is the software uses GEDCOM files, which appear to be text data files that contain the genealogical data. Upon further investigation, you will need a family - tree software application to create a GEDCOM file.

You may also want to check http://www.geneotree.com/

As Darko said, you can either use an FTP program (recommended) or the File Manager function which most web host control panels include.

Best of luck!

Thanks, i see i need to find out what "disc space" and "data transfer" refers to exactly, but i'll ask texo.

Gedcom is no probs, i use legacy and it can export it like that for you.

Disk Space is the space quota allowed for you to upload and Transfer is the amount of traffic your site can achieve - think of that in the same was an internet connection cap ;)

You won't need high quotas at all for the script, the smallest of small plan should do.

Good luck - keep us posted with your progress or if you need any help!

Finding my website - so its more than just putting it on the web....

I searched through phpgedview's forum, but seems as though no one has mentioned rankings, or anything like that.

How do i make sure some mine gets noticed?

Hi Boodles,

Google (and most other search engines) have a "bot" that crawls website pages which then stores the data that it collects this way to Google's search system. Sites such as the one you have in mind are at a slight disadvantage, as the bot prefers nice sentences, phrases, etc rather than short facts, which means you may wish to write up a basic outline of your family's history.

It can take a while - perhaps a few months even. It is always better to have as many links pointing to your website address as possible, as the bot follows all links - hopefully landing on your site.

The best advice in my opinion is a using link in your signature, it's always a good idea ;)
