Help with accessing router

Hi.

I want to know if anyone has an idea how i can access my router ( or find out its IP address). On the back its IP is 192.168.1.1 but when i try load it in IE ( or even ping it ) i get absolutely nothing and pinging comes back with Destination unreachable.

The reason i need to access it is i am currently sharing my Internet connection with another laptop in another room using ICS. I wanted to see if it worked and now that it does i want to have a security key for the network as i have setup ICS to allow other users to dialup my connection.

Also how do you find the IP addresses of the pc's on the network if they are set to obtain it automatically.

Depending on what router it is, its default ip should be 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.200 or 10.0.0.2 or umm 192.168.0.1 etc , however if default is listed as 192.168.1.1 then ya should be able to open ie or ffox, type in ip and a login page should showup, default password for alot of routers is admin administrator or admin password.

As for your question about automatic ip's, dhcp assinged ips well your router should have a page for that in the setup and show connected clients, if your router ip is 192.168.1.1 then the dhcp should start at 192.168.1.100 , 192.168.1.101 etc.

Hi, did all of the above but still had no luck... had a feeling it was because my pc ip was 192.168.0.1 ( ICS default ) and my router was on a different subnet. So just plugged in the netwrok cable, changed the ip to 192.168.1.2 and happily managed to access the router.

Just one more question then... how am i able to connect wirelessly to my router if my IP address is completely different. I thought the IP had to be exact barring the last digit.
 
Acidrain,

you pc's ip address needs to be on the ip same range of your router

So if your router's ip is 192.168.1.1 then yours needs to be 192.168.1.x...

if you are not on the same range then you will get destination host unreachable

To connect wireless: you need to have a similar ip address of that of the router ( router has same ip for lan and wireless)

if you are you trying to access it from a laptop or deskto pc:
Your PC has 2 ip addresses ( 1 for ethernet lan card and another for wireless PCI card)... you need to set the ip address of your wireless device to the same range as the router..
 
Thanks but i know all that hence why i used my lan to access the router. The thing that is confusing me is ( at this very moment ) my laptop is connected to the router using the IP 192.168.0.1 ( as this is the only address that works with ICS ). I just want to know why/how this is possible if you can only connect to devices on the same IP range.

Does the router automatically assign me with a new IP regardless of the fact that i don't have "Obtain IP automically" checked?

EDIT: I do notice, however that i cannot ping ne pc's ( not even mine ). Just get a request timed out message.

You can connect to a device with any ip but you cannot access it with any ip....

Why do you need to use ICS if you have a router?

Ok now i understand. Well its a PCMCIA data card and unfortunately the router i have is cheap and doesnt have a PCMCIA slot so need to allow access to the internet via my PC. e.g Client ---- router ---- host ---- internet
 
ohhh PCMCIA.... hmm im not an expert with that....

Soz but what is the question again?
 
ouch, my head hurts after reading all that. Im so confused.

just change the routers ip range to 192.168.0.x

then you can leave the ip range on your pc/laptop

just dont forget to change the default gateway the computers concerned to match the routers ip

Thanks for all the help. Did change the router but started to get annoyed by the fact that when im online, the other person/s disconnects me ( since i gave them the ability to dial up). At the end of it all i now have the pc's on the routers orignial ip range and running CCProxy on my pc. Alot better now that i can see exactly what these scoundrels are doing with my bandwidth because quite frankly they dodgy characters when it comes to late night surfing :D

Another awesome things is i can limit speed but they started complaining when they asked why dial-up was faster.Decided to give them 64K instead :D

Ok maybe im just not good with this, but dont you mean match the computers default gateway to my IP ( since i am supplying the connection to the internet not the router )

I know the DNS server ad must be that of the router for DHCP purposes. Or am i wrong in saying that aswell?
 
depends what you want running off what. If you are running connection sharing from one pc to another, then yes, the 2nd pc's gateway will need to be that of the first pc. If you are running router to pc, the pc's gateway needs to be the lan ip address of the router.

its all very simple :)
