So my ADSL line finally installed on Wednesday, 1 year 11 months and 14 days after ordering.

I called my cellular provider yesterday and told them to remove my data bundle, it seems that there was an amazing level of efficeincy on their part because as of this morning I can't access the web via my phone nor send mms's which is fine as long as they don't bill me next month...

Now I am going to sign up for a DoBroadband 1 bundle as soon as I confirm I'm no longer being billed for my mobile data bundle, but until then I will need something to connect with. I'm considering quickly stopping on my way home to get an Axxess prepaid voucher from Engen.

Can anyone possibly explain how these work? Do I simply enter in the username and password provided into my router and continue from there, or is there something I need to get done from Axxess's side as well?

The Prepaid Vouchers should work without needing to call Axxess.

You can also buy it online, you simply signup, make payment and receive a username & password that you can enter into your router.

When purchasing a prepaid voucher at Engen, you'll get a slip of paper with a username and a password.

All you need to do is to add those login credentials to your router/firewall/whatever and you're in business.

All the axxess prepaid accounts I've used, is hardcapped - once you've used your cap up, you can't browse anymore.

MH384 is right. Using prepaid vouchers is painless. The painful part is finding an Engen/Pick 'n Pay that knows what they are, let alone how to find them on their till. If you have a credit card it's much simpler to buy online

Please tell me the location of this efficient Engen that knows about these vouchers. I've tried 6 so far and only managed to get blank looks :(

Seems like I'm in a bit of a catch 22 then at this stage, without my mobile connection I can't access the net at home until I get an ADSL account. I don't want to get an ADSL account until I've absolutely confirmed that the data access on my mobile has been cancelled which I will only be able to check when I get home...guess I'll have to stop at every engen on my way home then and get a prepaid voucher...if not Engen then possibly pick n pay...

Thanks for the reply though guys, next month should be a lot easier going, will sign up with Telkom on the 1st and most likely WebAfrica for a lower latency connection.

Do not, I repeat, do NOT sign up with Telkom yet.

I am in no rush to, I'm happy to continue using prepaid until I confirm that I'm not paying for mobile data anymore. I also have my own modem and did a self install so I won't use any of their contract benefits.

Do you have a specific reason for saything this though?

Been there. Done that. Your best bet is to go to a PnP and look for the small side desk where they sell smokes. The tell that person to go to the prepaid screen and look for something with a 70 in it. They all give blank looks, but if one points the right item out on the screen then it usually works.

Yes, by signing a contract with telkom means giving them your bank details...

Best to remain on prepaid, there's a strong chance that prices will start to drop and telkom won't drop theirs just for the fun.

Now is really not the time to be getting into any contracts with Telscum. In the coming months, prices are going to drop and you're gonna be stuck with Telscum.

I suggest go prepaid or go Webafrica in the meantime.
Getting into contracts now is gonna be painful when you see the telecoms landscape changing around you and you've still got that ball and chain holding you down.

Most Engen stores have a sticker thing on their till points that show vodacom telkom mtn cellc etc axxess is also on that list. I have pointed to it before and then they suddenly found it on the system.

Ok, I understand about not signing up on a contract with Telkom. Will never do that! I was under the impression though that you could get DoBroadband1 on a monthly basis. Is this incorrect?

If I do go for a complete package via WebAfrica do they also give 10GB local for every 1GB blended bandwidth? If that's the case I'll just get a DSL complete package with them and 1GB unshaped prepaid as I require it.

Ok, first off you're not gonna get the 1GB blended and then free 10GB from anyone else besides TI.

Options I would suggest:

WebAfrica
DSL complete for R199 and then you've got choices between SAIX Local at R19 p/GB or IS Local at R70 for 10GB.

Cybersmart
One Price ADSL - 1GB @ R169 and then the WA offerings for local above.

doNoBand - sorry don't know and can't research it for you on the principle that I do my best to stay away from Telscum's sites.

Well getting Axxess prepaid was painless as can be, just went to the Engen down the road asked for a gig, got home and entered the username/password and it is working(what I'm using now)

Telkom's offer seems to be the best at this stage though for the price. 1GB blended will go rather far for what I intend to do and once that is up I will burn the 10GB on local downloads. I will also definately be getting 1GB unshaped from WA for the lower latency. All in all that's 12GB of which 2GB is potentially international and 10GB local for total price of R435. Doing it all through WA would cost R505.

I'm not really trying to be supportive of Telkom, the frustration I've gone through just trying to get my line should be enough not to let me touch them with a 20" pole, but the package does seem to be the best at this stage. For the R505 I could also stay with Telkom on do1, get 10gb local, 1GB unshaped and then have 2GB int & 20gb local for the same price as working through WA alone.

All the ones in cpt know what im talking about :) kenilworth/claremont and 1 or two others I've tried - just tell them its on the prepaid airtime menu.
