hey Guys,

Im buying myself a new pc and i got quite a low budget :(

anyway would someone pls give me some advice on cpu's.

first off all i do is play games, watch movies and music and the occassional movie convertion for my ipod but im not concerned about performace in those fields - only games :D.

Im having trouble deciding between Pentium D E2180 2.0Ghz , the Core 2 Duo E4400 2.0Ghz and the athlon x2 4000+ and athlon x2 4400+. I heard that the pentium D is easily overclocked to 50% and 100% with proper cooling (pc format). Its also R500 cheaper so...

anyway hope u can give me some input im really confused and i dont wana take a shot in the dark,

cheers

dude firstly the intel is cheaper and will oc 50-75% on air provided you have decent airflow in your box

the choice is not hard at all :)

Forget AMD. You'll want an Intel Core2 Duo. Are you getting a new motherboard too?

I'd say one of these if you're really on budget:

BX80557E4400 R 890 E4400 Intel® Boxed Core2™Duo E4400 Processor - 2.00GHz Dual Core, Socket 775, 2MB, 800MHz FSB, 65nm, 64-Bit Ready, 3 Year
BX80557E4500 R 905 E4500 Intel® Boxed Core2™Duo E4500 Processor - 2.20GHz Dual Core, Socket 775, 2MB, 800MHz FSB, 65nm, 64-Bit Ready, 3 Year
BX80557E4600 R 1,059 E4600 Intel® Boxed Core2™Duo E4600 Processor - 2.40GHz Dual Core, Socket 775, 2MB, 800MHz FSB, 65nm, 64-Bit Ready, 3 Year

Or one of these, with 4MB cache:

BX80557E6550 R 1,235 E6550 Intel® Boxed Core2™Duo E6550Processor - 2.33GHz Dual Core, Socket 775, 4MB, 1333MHz FSB, 65nm, 64-Bit Ready, 3 Year
BX80557E6750 R 1,425 E6750 Intel® Boxed Core2™Duo E6750 Processor - 2.66GHz Dual Core, Socket 775, 4MB, 1333MHz FSB, 65nm, 64-Bit Ready, 3 Year

Get the Pentium 1.8 Dual Core E2160 from PCInt, it's R540 ex-VAT.

Also 2x 1GB DDRII-800 from any dealer/retailer, take the cheapest you can get, PCInt sells them for R199 ex-VAT.

Finally GIGABYTE® "S Series" GA-P35-DS3L Motherboard motherboard for R1298.30 inc. VAT from The Prophecy Shop.

No one can guarantee the CPU will overclock well, even if 90% of them do, there are still those that don't, if it doesn't you can always upgrade later when you have some more cash saved up.

hmmm postman i am keen for the core 2 duo. im just hesitant cos i read in the latest pc format that the pentium d is only slightly different from the core 2 duo - plus its got mucho clocking headroom.
dunno how reliable pc format is though
thanks for the help

ok whats the website for pcint? ill have a lookie? so u dont think i should go for core2duo?

hey guys i live in durban. i duno if any of you heard of pc zone , but they have like a 5% markup on rectron prices take a look at this deal i just saw -

LGA1066 OC FSB motherboard, 1Gb DDRII 800 RAM, 80GB SATA II. Lightscribe dvd-writer, plain case for R2250!

Not sure about "clocking headroom", all I know is that Pentium D is old technology & overpriced now. So I'd rather go for the Core 2 Duo ;)

Is it those components or a complete PC? What kind of motherboard?

ok listen guys i think im getting confused.

Pentium Dual Core are E1240, E1260 e.t.c
Core 2 Duo are E4400 E4500 e.t.c.

i presume core 2duo is better?

hey gnome it is a complete pc no monitor mouse keyboard e.t.c.
just a case but its damn good value for money i think

Nope, Pentium D

Weird. Are you sure?

Intel® Core2™ Duo Series Dual Core Desktop Platform Processors
BX80557E2140 R 489 E2140 Intel® Boxed Dual-Core E2140 Processor - 1.60GHz Dual Core, Socket 775, 1MB, 800MHz FSB, 65nm, 64-Bit Ready, 3 Year

Intel® Pentium™ D Series Dual Core Desktop Series Processors
BX80553945 R 1,155 945 Intel® Boxed Pentium® D 945 Processor - 3.4GHz Dual Core, Socket 775, 2MBx2, 800MHz FSB, 65nm, 64-Bit Ready, 3 Year (No Virtualization)

*edit*

Maybe Rectron didn't categorise it properly ;)

I think you are confusing the Pentium D with a Pentium 4 perhaps? Both are based on the same core, Pentium D only has certain features disabled.
