Hi all,

My car recently over heated and stopped working. It is a 2004 1.6L Ford Fiesta.

It has been towed to a mechanic shop where I was told that the Head Gasket is blown, and needs to be skimmed. This apparently all resulted from the water pump not working as it should due to ware - water wasn't moving through the block properly.

After speaking to some people they have said that its not clear exactly what is needed until the engine is taken apart, but the normal requirements to get this car working are:

Getting the head skimmed, new head gasket, new water pump, cam belt + tension....

I have been given a ballpark amount from mechanic shop of 11k.
This seems excessive, and I am worried that regardless of what is needed i will be charge the 11k if i accept it.
How can I accept that ballpark quote without getting a real quote, ie on paper with exactly what is wrong.

Anyone know a reliable and honest mechanic in CPT?
Anyone know how much this should cost?

I had my old car's radiator replaced, plus a major service for R1555 from a man that works from his home in Door de Kraal:

Leon van der Mescht: 021 913 3843

He's REALLY cheap and works very well (uses cheap "grey" parts rather than original Toyota / Ford etc though, but that's also okay, its cheap)

Well, not really sure why they need to replace the cambelt. That depends on the km's.
The waterpump can be removed and tested, so no need to really replace it. If there is "wear" on the pump, it needs to be investigated. This should not happen.
Radiator would propably need to be flushed and cleaned.
The head scim and seal replacement is a given for overheated engine.

This is a good price. I paid the R10k two months ago to have the same done on a 2001 1.6 Astra. The reason you replace the water pump, thermostat, cam belt and tensioner is because you need to take them off anyway to do the engine top and the labour required for that is often more expensive than the parts. In other words, you save by doing them along with the engine top as opposed to doing them at a later stage on their own.

my brother is a mechanic. he specialises on alfa romeos, but also works on any other car models. if you interested, pm me and i will send you his number. he is in the southern suburbs and will give you a very good price.
