I have had a look at some of the remotes and apps on the google play store and have managed to download Yatse and XBMC remote but must just figure it out. I guess that's all part the learning curve. I have found though, that the apps always say the the unit rooted before it will work. So are the DroidTV units rooted or do I still have to do it?
Yatse is the best. Don't even bother with the rest. I landed up purchasing it to support Tolriq the developer. The official XBMC remote app doesn't come close.
You don't need to root for it to work on the Android box afaik. You just need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Here are a few tips:
Go to settings and then services. Do the following:
Make sure that you give it a unique name in general settings.
Enable all of the uPnP options
Enable the webserver and make sure it is running on a unique port - 80 is usually fine
Don't bother with a password unless you want to restrict remote control access in the house
Enable all remote control options
Not sure if it is possible on Android, but try to enable Zeroconf and all Airplay options as well.
Once this is done, Yatse should pick up your XBMC install automatically when you set it up. In Yatse you go to settings>manage>click the plus button.
If it doesn't pick up your server automatically, don't fret, it's easy to do manually (Zeroconf is often required for it to auto-find the XBMC install). Do the following:
In your router, assign your XBMC box a static IP (usually in the DHCP server, or do it manually in Android if you can) - this ensures that Yatse can talk to the box without being configured each time you restart your router or Android box
In XBMC, note the IP address and the port number you set in the services settings.
Add this manually in the settings>manage>plus button in Yatse and assign it the same name you gave in the XBMC services settings as well.
Click next, select posters instead of banners (IMO it looks better) and voila, the remote will work.
All you're doing there is telling Yatse the IP address of the box, so it knows the route it needs to take over your WiFi network to talk to it, and you're telling it the port number to use so it knows how to do this. That's all you need to understand about that (in layman's terms) to get it going...
