Hi

Can you guys please comment on the following PC for a gaming rig (my hardware knowledge is way outdated)

ASUS VENTO 7700 Gaming Chassis
ASUS Intel P965 LGA775
Q6600 Intel Core 2 Quad LGA775 2.40GHz Quad Core
ASUS Nvidia Geforce 8800GTX, 768MB, 256bit DDR3
Coolermaster eXtreme Power 600 Watt
2x Axiz 1024MB DDR2 667MHz PC5200 240 Pin CL5 DIMM Memory Module
Seagate NL35 250GB RAID Ready Serial ATA Hard Drive (SATA 3Gb/s, 7200rpm, NCQ, 8MB Cache)
LG 18x SUPER MULTI DVDREWRITER (NonLightscribe) (SATA)
LG 22" Wide LCD Monitor with DVI 2ms
Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 6000 v2.0 USB
Microsoft Windows Vista Business 32bit

I can buy this for R17 500.

Specifically I want to know the following:
1) Core 2 Quad or Core 2 Duo?
2) Is it worth taking the 8800GTX or will the 8800GTS (320mb or 640mb) be ok?
3) Is the ASUS brand ok?
4) The RAM should probably be 800mhz and not 667mhz?
5) Windows Vista 32bit or 64bit? (I have Win XP Professional and need to buy a OS with the computer)
6) Is the motherboard I selected ok for this machine?

Thanks.

1) Core2Quad
2) If you can afford the GTX, go for it
3) Don't see why not
4) I'd prefer 800MHz, but I know people that are happy with 667MHz
5) If you HAVE to buy Vista, go 32-bit

all seems good! I am naar! lol, your PC is 1000times better than mine!!

WKJ
1)Agree
2)Agree
3)Agree
4) unless you are going to Overclock the 667 will do just fine
5)Its a difficult issue? But agreed on the 32 bit instead of 64!

Seems me and you agree about everything on the forums, Zenbaas :D

The Intel P965 chip set is already obsolete try get a motherboard with a P35 chip set which will also make it easier for future upgrades. The rest looks awesome

WKJ Agreed...also afrikaans:D
I can't disagree when i agree...can i?
Maybe a Gigabyte GA p35 DS3R/DS3P....

personally i would do my best to gigabyte and not take an asus board at all

to many problems will using 4 sticks of ram

1) Core 2 Quad
2) 8800GTS 320mb
3) ASUS is great.
4) get 800mhz RAM
5) Windows Vista 32bit if you must get an OS
6) Get the ASUS P5K board

Get the Gigabyte board. Also get the 1066 ram, available for R999 for 2 x 1GB pack, not the best for gaming though, but works just fine.
Also, if you can afford it, get the GA-P35C-DS3R mobo. Supports DDR3 for future upgrades.

If im not mistaken the gigabyte P35 DS3R/P also supports ddr3 for future upgrades. Other thing is 1066ram will be a waste from what i understand for quads at leist.667 is fine for normal use while 800 is only really necessary for a great overclock. The quads FSB runs at 1066 for all for cores. From what i remember this means that it will be unecessarily to get any higher ram than 800 for the Q6600.The guys on hardforums constantly harp on this.

@xeo is that the ram special from buycomputers?

Yes from www.buycomputers.co.za The P35-DS3P is Sli right? He does not need Sli.
BTW was not aware about the 1066 ram issue. Theoretically it makes sense to get 1066 ram so long as your mobo supports it...also why shud the 1066 not run @ 1066 when the Q6600 FSB is 1066?
