I got a pretty good optical cable running from my TV to the amp, gold plated and armoured as well, and the sounds from the PS3 is 100X better than from my DVD, even though my DVD is connected direct to the amp where as my Ps3 has HDMI to TV.

Optical sound from PS3 to a 5.1 system is amazing, you wont be let down.
I think if you wanted 7.1 surround sound, then you would have to use the HDMI, could be mistaken though.

Nope optical cable is better for sound than HDMI

id prob go with HDMI cable ? but you would need the AMP that could transcode 7.1 sound

Why would optical be much better?

IIRC, very little loss in the cable. The optical signal is just a bouncing ray(s) of light, whereas the HDMI cable has an electrical signal in a copper (?) wire.

They are both digital signals so they are both excellent and no having gold plating won't help either of them except con you out of money :p The only problem is that the PS3 won't output 7.1 channels through optical. I have a 7.1 amp and speakers that uses only optical and the sound is still exceptional even though the amp forces 7.1 from the PS3

I'll avoid those all in one systems if at all possible. Ask yourself what you actually need and realise that you are paying extra for all in one products from sony and samsung. You might be surprised to find that you can buy a higher end system for not much more than those all in one box systems.

Going back to your original question, you really don't need hdmi if you are buying a 5.1 box system. Optical will be fine in that case

Surely the original sound would have to be recorded so as to take advantage of 7.1? I mean, a mono original is just going to give you the same noise out of each of the speakers.
