Hi Everyone

This is probably a question that's been asked a very great many times at this point.

So, 7 years ago, I completed my Matric NSC. Due to a mixture of living very far away, and my parent's unwillingness to make the hour and a half drive to take me to school, throughout my high school years, and my growing disillusionment with it all, I somehow managed to pass my matric, albeit not very well.
I got a B for English and LO(useless subject), but where I really failed was Maths and Physical Science where I achieved 40% in both. A fail, but legally a pass.
While in my mind, it was quite a surprise that I even passed, given I wrote my finals knowing next to zero basics to guide me after missing something around 100 days of school a year, I somehow got it done.
At university level, nobody cares. Obviously.

After school, I went straight to work, not even thinking about a degree as I had to find a way to support myself financially. Since then, I've worked many jobs to survive, knowing the older I get, the less time I have for a degree. However, I've never been able to sit down and really think, "I need this!"

Fast forward 7 years, and I've hit that point. The lack of stability in jobs really bothers me immensely. I worked as an online teacher, which fell apart when Covid hit. I also freelance as a writer for a ghostwriting company.
All I have is a TEFL.

But I've always found my interest to lie in technology, and I'd like to work towards a degree that embraces that.
However, my lack of programming knowledge really does bother me at this stage. I know I can learn it, but I feel I've fallen behind in the game substantially.

Now, I've spoken to a Unisa counselor, but she wasn't really helpful as to what my options are. I've spoken to two, actually, and haven't gained any kind of clarity. The one said I should stop trying for It and look into teaching, despite it not being a passion or something I want to do for the rest of my life.

I'm really not that interested in having to go back and rewrite my matric. I want to move forward, not backwards and what's done is already done.

Ive heard about bridging programmes, but nobody can really explain to me what they are, or how I can go about applying for them, which is really frustrating. It's more or less like I've been in the dark on this matter.

Can anybody here provide some explanation on what course of action I can take towards pursuing a degree at this stage through Unisa?
Or let's say as well, towards gaining a path of entry into Software Development or Cloud-based careers in let's say, three to five years time?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I would advice you to do certificates like A+, N+, Windows 10, Linux, Python, Java AWS, MS Azure via Torque IT or any place next to you that offers these certificates.

At the end of the day, you end up more technical than the person with degree.

Just my two cents.

I don’t know about bridging courses, but I did matric a second time to get some of my lagging marks up to scratch so I could do a BS (maths in particular - also in the 40 something percent range at first attempt). Didn’t really attend anything, just self studied and wrote the exams.

However you do it, if you can do this, I think it would be good for your career.

You end up with a different set of skills. “More technical” is a bit of a misnomer.

I am planning on looking at those, but the degree is that added security, if you know what I mean.

I'm really only wanting to see this as the absolute last resort. In the meantime, I'm hoping to find some kind of solution.

FYI, I only did the 3 subjects I needed to improve in, so you may not have to do them all (this was back in the early 90's though).

I am not sure what course of subject but your matric results is not a problem. When registering with Unisa you have to give two qualifications. So choose the subject you want and also check what Higher certificate courses they have that will give you enough points to study the course you want to do. I think they list everything on there.

Just to clarify, you mean completing a Higher Certificate in either Mathematics or Physical Science(as those are the two options) and then applying for a BSc?

I can't remember what the options where. Will see in the week if I have time to check. But I'm sure if I remember correctly they list it there. Otherwise check if you don't have a campus nearby.

I am supposed to do Assignments tonight. Online only. I cannot log into Myunisa. It just simply Timeouts.

I don't think rewriting matric maths and physical science is moving 'backwards'. In fact I think it will open up more doors for you and allow you to study a degree at a proper institution (assuming you can get good marks the second time round).

Matric maths and science is actually not that difficult if you study efficiently. Have a look at some walkthroughs of past papers:

Also old but these playlists will certainly help:

Please don't do this. You'll be in an even worse position.

Speak to Unisa about their bridging course, they have one if memory serves OR just go and rewrite your Matric Subjects. This way while more painful will actually take you somewhere.

The IT Certs will leave you in line with 100's of others with their A+.
