okay so the title is difficult to fit in what I'm struggling with here. This is the scenario:

User is based at a location off my companies intranet. He needs to connect via VPN in order to receive email. He also needs to be able to use the internet, though heres the kicker: he must be able to access the internet via his local connection while still being connected to the VPN. I'd rather not have the User use internet through our office over the VPN, and I don't want to make things difficult for him whereby he needs to disconnect the VPN in order to browse, then reconnect when he wants mail.

This must be possible. I used something called route splitter for gaming a few years back - surely something exists for VPNs?

I presume they're using windows as a client at the remote office? Check under the dial up properties for the VPN connect. Select Networking tab, then IPv4, Adanced down the bottom, Un-tick "use default remote gateway".
