ok guys im no computer techie ,so i would appreciate it if someone could help me please :o

here is my problem

i have 3 hardrives in my pc ,1 hdd (80gig)for storage only and the other 2 has windows loaded on them ,so on wednesday i phoned my wife to copy all our holiday pictures of a good few years into a folder onto the 80 gig as i intended to reload windows on 1 of the other hdd as windows was acting up lately so she does this while im at work ,when i get home i do new full installation load all the drivers and pc working fine ,so now i ask her where she stored the photo's cause i cant find it on the 80gig she then show me where she copied it to which was a hidden folder that was visible at the time

and the folder is called the "system volume information" (on the 80gig which has no windows installed on it) i dont know why she stored it in there ,so i opened the folder and see pics but the preview thumnails are not showing ,so when i click on them it says NO PREVIEW AVAILABLE ,i have tried copying it to a new location it tells me some error access denied ,i am adminitrator and have taken ownership of the folder but nothing seems to be working and i cant lose all those PICS

PLEASE HELP !!!!!! :(

But then is it actually copying it properly?

dont know what you mean :o when im in the system volume file i can see the file where the pics are stored but unable to open them keeps on saying no preview avl Ive finally managed to copy them out of the folder "system volume infomation" but it still says the same thing :(

What sizes are the photos?

Are you using an "Administrator" account? i.e. are you able to do pretty much anything on your PC without it giving you hassles about not being an administrator?

What file types are the pictures? Likely JPEG, but just making sure.
You say you're unable to preview them. Are you able to open them? Post one for us somewhere and see if we can open it (this can help us to determine whether it is simply a problem with your installation, or a problem with the files)

yeah send one of us a picture and let us see what happens,, then we can try and pix it from our pc...send me one, i'll give it a bash

Try right click "Open With" and choose Picture and Fax viewer.

Also right click any pic and select properties and check the file size and report back.

As asked before...are they JPG files? Perhaps because of the re-install the software required to open them was lost and now file association is screwed?

Weird one this is

your last statement sound interesting"file asscociation screwed because of re-install " cause when i tried opening it with paint it says something like cant read file type ,i also did that "openwith " and it just opens blank screen which still says no preview available ,they are all jpeg ,cant send them as they are on my home pc with no internet :o

i tried staying out of this thread because the information given to troubleshoot is a bit, erm, "all over the place".

anyway, it IS a permissions problem, no doubt about it. even though you said you went and took ownership I believe you didnt, or didnt do it correctly, or yout hought you did but actually didnt.

ok, do like this, log in to windows as THE ADMINISTRATOR, not as a member of the administrators group...(on the welcome screen, press crt+alt+delete and then press it again, then physically type in "Administrator" and supply the password you assigned to this accoutn (90% chance it is blank *sigh*)
then
1- right click (on the folder which contains the files with problem)>> Properties
2- go to Security tab
3- Click on Add
4- Click on Advance
5- Click on Find Now
6- Select Administrators
7- Click on OK
8- Click on OK
9- Click on Full Control
10-Click Apply
11-Click OK

if you have no security tab, then disable simple file sharing if using xp pro, or reboot and do this in safe mode if using xp home.

thanks will give this a go at home :o ,makes sense cause i only took ownership under my user name which is part of the administrator groups
