Henin quits tennis

At 25, after half a year of seeking to rekindle that flame, the seven-time major champion finally accepted that it was out forever, announcing her decision Wednesday to leave the sport as the No. 1 player in the world.

Henin is the first woman to quit the sport while ranked No. 1, according to the WTA Tour.

Her announcement came a day after one of the greatest female golfers in history said she's quitting: Annika Sorenstam, owner of 10 major titles and one of six women to complete a career Grand Slam in her sport, is walking away at the end of the season.

I'm a bit sad to see her go because she could always be relied upon to knock out one of the Williams sisters. For a small lady she packs a punch. Now I'm going to have to listen to the three shrieking maniacs (Serena, Venus and Maria) go at it .

I'm a bit confused about her 'retirement' because an AFP article on News24 today says that she is only thinking of retiring

She might be hinting at retirement and suffering a bad patch, but you write off world number one Justine Henin at your peril insists Serena Williams, despite the Belgian's fourth defeat in four months.

But despite her Berlin set back, with a huge lead in the WTA rankings, Henin would have to suffer disaster at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon to be in danger of losing her world crown to nearest rival Ana Ivanovic.
