Hermanus riots

I must say this is perfectly timed to scare away those who booked a long weekend in Hermanus. Cancellations must be coming in fast.

Good by the locals,

About 600 people who have been displaced from Zwelihle as a result of the protests were staying at Sandbaai Hall in Hermanus.

Pieter van Aswegen‚ a concerned local resident‚ said that due to a situation where people had been intimidated‚ displaced and fleeing their homes in Zwelihle township‚ the community had come out in support of those staying in the hall.

“I went to [a local supermarket] to buy some supplies to donate and found that people were there buying food‚ nappies‚ soft drinks and baby food to assist the residents who were staying at Sandbaai.”

He said he also saw some people bringing gas bottles to assist in cooking for the displaced residents. Van Aswegen said others were bringing blankets.

I am glad that I'm not the only saying this, and it is easily picked up by going through Twitter,

Van Aswegen said there was rumour that this protest was driven by people who were not local residents.

“Our people will not go and destroy clinics and would not break down a recycling centre‚ which brings a source of income to the community‚” he said.

Businesses are suffering big time just now. Gateway mall is apparently evacuated again and many shops and restaurants in the town are closed or are closing as crowds gather for a supposed march at 2pm.

There are a lot of comments on the Facebook groups of people asking about the weekend, some have already said they've cancelled.

Suffice to say, this loss of income on one of the biggest weekends of the Hermanus calendar is going to be a disaster for everyone from the owner to the bottle washers.
 
Gotta love that social media is full of swines supporting this fully and actually glad it's going down this way. And before the silent ones pip up about how it's only a few, go jump. One topic which had 650 odd replies had a healthy 80% for not against. Sh*thole living up to it's status ......

The community effort is massive.

The first rumours that the perps were from Kleinmond and Grabouw have been strongly denied though it is still thought that 'outsiders' are to blame. There is also a rumour just now of other buses heading that way but I think (hope)this is BS.

It's disgusting. Rather than forcing authorities to expand housing programs to help those in need, these fscking idiots are only supporting perpetual poverty by expanding informal settlements.

I witnessed an argument on FB between one person who was saying 'so what if I have a house in E Cape, I want one here too.' Who the fsck is actually being helped here?
 
Interesting to see that the savage looters also took the opportunity to show their xenophobic savage racist violent natures towards foreign Africans. As usual the police were just 'too late' to protect Somali shopkeepers. Where else in the world would a particular populace continue to be exonerated from intimidating, attacking and murdering foreigners? They continue to get a free pass even after government was found to be complicit.

Grabouw has their own issues regarding land grabs and unrest. I know that some Kleinmond ‘blacks’ are unhappy with some Zwelihle ‘blacks’ since a Kleinmond service delivery tender award last year which went to a man in Zwelihle, but I don’t see them cosy up with some elements in the Zwelihle community to amok.

Generally, I believe that this is some political party interested in gaining a popular vote in these districts. Whomever the power behind this, knows well that land cannot be grabbed, it is emotionally powered, people are pawns.

Say this succeed, they actually receive land which I highly doubt, then this will burst out over in Grabouw and Strand/Gordon's Bay.

Ironically, they went and destroyed those 'newly' build houses as well... Jeopardising the expansion phases and extending the waiting period.
 
A notice from a local councilor from a couple of minutes ago...

Feedback: I just came out of a meeting chaired by Min Bongikosi Madikizela concerning the current situation. There has been a couple of possible solutions tabled and this is being discussed with the community leaders/disgruntled backyard dwellers. They way how they receive the possible solutions will ultimately determine the way forward.

SAPS is dealing with the criminal element and thus far 74 people have been arrested, of which about 30 have appeared in court already.

Yep, Kleinmond rioted for a couple of days over this, and I'm sure the whole area is watching with interest over how this is now handled. It won't take much to spark this all over.

Just think what could have been if the politicians actually tried to help these people for the last 20 odd years instead of looting and plundering. I mean imagine if these greedy spinelss basstards actually had a plan to take the whole country forward together. But now they have the nerve to divide us along racial lines to cover their thieving arses and the results are there now for all to see.
