Looking at dedicated self-managed servers - is Hetzner reliable in terms of network stability and decent hardware? If not, are there any decent alternatives (other than colo which will be too expensive)?

Been a client of theirs since 2000 with both Self-managed and Hetzner-managed dedicated servers and have never had a problem with them.

Thanks guys. Do you know if Hetzner hard drives are hot-swappable, or do they require a power down of the server to be replaced?

Then +1 for Hetzner if you're looking for self managed. Anyone else is either far too unreliable or incredibly expensive.
Hardware you should be able to determine yourself https://hetzner.co.za/dedicated-servers/

In terms of value for money, hosting within ZA is expensive. If you do consider looking to host offshore look at hetzner.com, OVH or Hivelocity.

Have my own infrastructure offshore. This is for a client who absolutely needs a local solution with >99.9% uptime.
