Hidden price increase when buying food through Mr D and Uber Eats

Ordering a meal on Mr D and Uber Eats is substantially more expensive than buying it directly from the restaurant, even when excluding their respective delivery and service fees.

MyBroadband compared the price of ordering food from five popular outlets in-store to buying the same food items through Mr D and Uber Eats. We found that markups on food ranged from 14% to 40.5%.

The day I discovered how big the markup is with Mr D, I stopped using them. Uber I cut off years ago when a driver stole my cash payment and Uber took the side of the driver, not mine or my CCTV proof.

If our house wants a take away, I only get from a place within 1-5km of my house and drive there to pay store price with no delivery fee, tip or markup.

The markups are mental as take aways are already expensive compared to home cooking or braai'ing.

Its not hidden you fking moron. You pay for the service

Guys, come on, do you honestly think any service in the world is "FREE" ? Obviously not, so you know you're going to pay and you know that increases happen.
Food delivery services are for those who are able to get it and afford it.
Like everything in life.
Use it, don't use it - just talk with your wallet.

Pray tell me - where's the "hidden price increase"? The price is there when you order. There's absolutely no "increase" - there's a "cost".

It's hidden for those who don't know that the base prices are different in-store.

I only ever buy the specials (buy 1 get 1 free) so it works out cheaper than in-store. Some places always have these "specials" though so I avoid those. It's the stores that do the (buy 1 get 1 free) deals infrequently that have decent deals.

you get what you pay for, and obviously the service costs money,
despite the takealotmore and memberships and all that stuff, it still costs money,

ensh1tificati0n

Great report. Now do an analysis on the damage that Kosher and Halaal certification does to the food and beverage market. Focus on how these horrible food practices limit companies from procuring best-price raw materials from suppliers who do not have these certifications and how it limits entry into the market for new companies.

Food arrives cold because that's how efficient South Africans and the economy are.
If SA was a successful country in other spheres, there would be success here too.

Order garbage food in. You have to pay a premium. MrD doesn't run a charity service. They want to make money. Same for the fast food slop place people buy their 'meals' at. And on top of it all there is the ANC which take a cut in taxes to pay for their luxuries.

Thanks for the insight Dr Wiki ;)

I think I've used MrD/Uber Eats 2 or 3 times in my life.

If I need to order takeaway, I walk to the shopping center across the way from me and buy fish and chips or pizza.

Why are you too damn lazy to get in your car and drive 2 km to get a takeaway? You don't even have to interrupt your precious Netflix viewing if you just watch it on your phone.

Bloody useless generation this. In my day, we went hunting for our own bucks and braaied them ourselves and grew our own vegetables. Now you can't even get off your couch.
