Hi everyone,

I'm been an avid PC user since my first PC, but as part of my day job I have been using a Dell Latitude E6540 and I have really begun to enjoy it.

I think the most rewarding feature has been the SSHD, which is a hybrid hard drive which sometimes makes me want to rather use the work laptop instead of waiting to boot up my main PC if I need to use the internet or something minor.

So I have been shopping around for a high end laptop, but I'm not sure what would be the best purchase as the goal is for the new laptop to replace my PC and become my main computer.

I am a Dell fan at the moment, just due to how well my work laptop has been working, so I am considering a Dell, but with a 1 terabyte solid state hard drive in order to try and have the laptop last longer.

I like the Dell XPS 15 9560, but at around R 45k its some serious cash.

If you were looking to buy a high end laptop with the goal of the specs lasting around 3 years, what would you recommend?

Buy abroad. You will pay a lot less. You can get a 2017 non-touch at around 22k. If you know someone travelling a lot, you can have them bring it back for you and you will pay no taxes, duties or shipping fees. But, even with shipping fees, taxes and duties you will still end up paying less than R30k.

What do you use your main computer for? That will guide what you need in the laptop.

There are some pretty good high-end laptops at different price points - along with the Dell XPS and Asus UX330 already mentioned, there are the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon and Ideapad 710S (if you can find this - it is a fantastic machine for a very good price). And of course, there are Macbooks to choose from.

Contact Flashgear on the forum, he is a laptop reseller and always have very good deals. A week or 2 ago he had a Dell Precision i7, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD plus 1 TB HDD and dedicated AMD graphics AFAIK, he advertised this laptop for R20k, it retails for close to R40k I think.
You can tell him exactly what you are interested in for example Dell XPS i7, at least 16 GB RAM, at least 512 GB SSD etc etc, and he'll let you know when something like that comes along.
