Update: Seems stable now. Maybe just a fluke. Please ignore thread unless I change this header. Thanks all.

Noobs might still want to have a look at it just to see how ADSL help request are done properly though. :D

Evening people

Generally I don't need help with ADSL, but today I do. I've got a bit of a conundrum & I'm unsure how to proceed.

For the last month or my line (2mbps/Netgear DGN2200) has been plagued by latency spikes during peak times (Friday/Sat night). Roughly 10 sec interval, but irregular.

Today the latency is completely shot. 200-400ms average with occasional short periods of 17ms (normal). The "today" part being interesting in that the router shows the ADSL interface went down 13 hours ago.

Speedtests at ~80% of normal. Kinda weak, but not something I'd freak out about. Browsing OKish - maybe slightly slow.

Tried:
>>Port reset
>>Other ISP (OW/TI)
>>Other computer
>>Router reset
>>Disconnect phone
>>No port filter
>>DNS from custom to auto
>>Blocked everything except ICMP

Phoned Telkom, they reckon both exchange and line looks fine their side.

Line stats
Line Attenuation 29.0 db 18.0 db
Noise Margin 14.4 db 12.0 db

Noted fluctuating Noise margin between 14-16. Fluctuations unusual - usually more stable @ 16 if memory serves.

Tracerts show the latency is on first hop after router, regardless of ISP.

Everything except latency seems to be at least OK.

So...is this a congested exchange or a line fault?

I'm having the same issue, Telkom did a port reset to no avail. Can't tell if my fault ticket is still open because of site maintenance. The issue does go away every now and then for a few hours but it's been like this for two weeks now.

I have the exact same issue descibed above. Started for me on the 26th. A few hours it will be fine then start again. Also after rebooting the modem the issue is not there for the fist couple of minutes.

I've had this issue for almost 2 months now. It returned to normal for about a week, but then the problem reared it's ugly head again. Telkom has been "working" on it, but they can't seem to find the issue.

I've noticed that when I restart my router it's fine for about half an hour or so and then my latency starts going up again. This is slowly driving me insane.

We (as Stellenbosch residents) had our high latency issue fixed by Tweeting to @TelkomZA and then they fixed the core router issue within 24 hours! Our latencies were like 500ms - 1500ms, and now it is back to 15ms again :D

I (Cape Town CBD connected to Salt River ) have the same problem since around March. Usually happens late at night. None of the usual options worked. Eventually the lady said its peak hour overload and there's nothing much she can do about it. But that she will put in a "hardware review" for me. I still merrily suffer the massive latency spikes. Basicly no solution was offered.

Shot pada. :)

If it keeps going I'll try that. Usually just a few hours on fri & sat so will wait and see a bit
