High mobile data prices – Operators respond

It's also true that mobile networks keep data prices high to reduce traffic and congestion on their data networks, although this seldom seems to get a mention in articles of this sort.

then why have a pricing model that incentivises high usage?

Then why are they offering packages like this, but can't offer the same to voice contracts?

While people are buying a gig for R149 I don't see a reason for Vodacom to change their pricing.

What are people going to do? Only a handful of people will actually port their numbers somewhere else.
Stupid people need to be milked of their cash.

I can’t believe people still pay that much for 1gig of data. South Africans are truly rich.

They deserve to get charged that 149. In fact Vodacom must increase their prices lol lmfbo.vodacom must milk them dry.

I like that

Thanks, but NO thanks. OOB sharky!

Thats another thing they should tackle , at the moment its clear that they do have surplus bandwidth available , hence why they can drop the prices that much, the OOB serves no purpose to the consumer and only serves as a cash cow for vodacom.

The problem is illegal data expiry.
If you buy a big bundle to get batter rates, you then get your data stolen by data expiry.

Cell-C:
“That is why we support the implementation of a national broadband network (WOAN) and want to see more cooperation between mobile operators in terms of infrastructure sharing.”
I don't support Taxpayer funded (WOAN) network.

There is nothing to stop you (cell networks) from sharing infrastructure.
I know that the same tower near me has both MTN and Cell-C equipment.
Also don't Cell-C have a roaming agreement with Vodacom.
And Vodacom has make uses RAIN, Telkom used MTN, etc.

WOAN is a scam to get taxpayers to fund a new build.
Since we already have 99% coverage in RSA - we don't need WOAN to address that.

WOAN == TAXYPAYER SCAM

Which ones? The only ones I really see doing it are Cell C and Telkom LTE. Night data doesn't actually count as it shifts usage to off peak times.

Those don't look like good deals to me. Firstly, you're effectively only getting half of the advertised bundle (who the hell is going to be up after midnight using all that data). Secondly it's a 24-month contract, which means only a relative minority of people will sign up for this. I certainly don't do contracts anymore, wouldn't touch a 24-month contract with a barge pole.

Trust me, if there were a better option, I would move in an instant. I had ported my number to Cell C, then ported back to Vodacom because Cell C does not have LTE in many parts of the country, and at the time, their 3G network performance was terrible (still terrible in East London, somewhat okay in PE, after many complaints). MTN is no different to Vodacom. Not sure of Telkom Mobile's LTE network performance in EL. I am happy paying R94 p/m for 1GB at Vodacom - fast network everywhere :)

Well for one option there it's Afrihost & AXXESS....

R57/58 = 1GB
R97/98 = 2GB
R147/148 = 3GB

The above is great when you are with MTN because you use your current simcard for calls and Afrihost/Axxess data with just adding a new entry by your APN settings.

Maybe there are other options available for other service providers but the above has worked for me thus far.

We need to start researching and not just giving our monies away to these thieves.
