So pulled the trigger on a beast and have a *very* decent quote from DiscoveryInsure but they require the installation of their DQ-Track unit that measures all kinds of telemetry & performs analysis to "rate" your driving. They have stated that they DO NOT take telemetry readings into consideration for accidents, just location validation. But, you don't buy a performance car to drive slowly, so worried about next year's renewal being absolutely insane! Anyone with any experience on year 2 renewals willing to comment here? Any other insurers I should try?

DQ will affect your premium. DQ also allows Discovery the benefit of knowing if you have had an accident, i.e. to call you, check if you are ok and need assistance.

I tried the first iteration of their app on my phone years ago.
It registered excessive acceleration and hard cornering as I pulled out of a parking bay.

So no. Fukdatshit.

I got as far as a quote. A 3.3L V6 ain't no dinky toy.
It's not a toyota or any other sought after suvs and such.

Discovery were the only ones to insist on a tracker. Everyone else was happy with the factory fitted alarm/immobilizer.

I do think the OP should hunt around some more.

Also the fat hippo are all insurers that are under written by A&G, so pretty much the same place.

LoL, outsurance called me the other day. I did the whole quote schlep out of curiosity. They are sooo desperate for business, the sales guy was soooo needy on the phone. While I did not sign up with them I did give the guy some sales tips. First one was that needy is bad :p

Yip. Had the same. Hard cornering during peak hour traffic on the N1.

If you go fast enough you break the algorithm so that you're effectively disqualified from any driving rewards.
Test drove a Golf R when the current shape just came out. Went on the highway and a new Focus ST threw brights. The guy from the dealership in the passenger seat told me to give it some stick, so I did.

These 2. Discovery / Outsurance will not insure me. Used their app when they had some driving challenge nonsense going on some years back. Was interesting to see how often one unintentionally exceeds the speed limit. Also found a few spots where their set speed limits were incorrect (Marlboro Drive was one such, they had it at 50km/h when it was actually 80km/h)

Went for a brekkie run one morning, Jozi, Pinehaven, up over Hekpoort, down Bekker Schools & into Magalies, popped phone in jacket pocket.
Checked the app in Magalies as it had thrown a hissy fit - harsh acceleration commencing at 210km/h, harsh cornering at 240km/h, harsh braking from 210km/h.
There were also gaps in the track, where it simply could not keep up.

Thought nothing of it, had a laugh & forgot about it.

Few years later bought wifey a new car & phoned for a quote. They would not provide cover. Finish & klaar. Would provide cover under wifey ID, additional excess of R10k if I was the driver & there was an accident.

They won't use it themselves, but they'll happily provide it to any third party claiming against you.

Thanks so much for the advice folks, yeah, my new beast at 4l and 412 kW v8 is probably not going to be slow and may just blow up the DQ App! Broker called and on the hunt for another decent insurance quote.

Really? Did this happen to you and did it affect it when the premiums were revised the next year? Crap.

I had it installed on my previous car and there was one occasion when driving hard to pickup kids that Discovery called me to check if I'd been hijacked!
It was a bakkie and didn't seem to affect my premium the following year but was only once....new car will likely be driven hard every time!

The rules might have changed because I left DI over a year ago. When I signed up with them and received that driving monitor I refused to activate it and Discovery were happy with that.

Mind you I never had a claim, they might have repudiated it.

I also have a performance car and signed up with Discovery Insure just a month ago. The tracker and Vitality Drive reward system is optional. You can choose not to take it and get a lower premium. That's what I did as I don't drive too much these days so I wouldn't be making much use of the fuel rewards.

I was surprised how much lower their premium was. I'm paying less than half vs A&G. Just ask them for a quote without Vitalitydrive. Should be like R50/R60 cheaper too.

From what I've heard too, the points tracking is not used to calculate your premium increases. You get an increase just like everyone else. It's only if you claim, that the data will be looked at and then you probably will get a slightly higher increase the next year like most all insurers do. So you have nothing to lose I'd say as you can just cancel and go elsewhere if they increase the premium too much. That's what I'll do.
