High Performance Car Insurance

Even though Discovery says they won't use the tracker to refute claims, they can use the info of the tracker to obtain additional info which they in turn can use to deny claims.

Mate of mine had an accident, Discovery miraciously obtained CCTV footage from 3rd parties and said he was driving too fast. They obviously pinpoint your GPS coordinates and use it to assess claims

There's no way an insurance company would encourage you to use that thing unless it benefits them - the company.

It helps locate a car after it's stolen. Not all cars are found in time but a lot are. So less claims and lower premiums. Everyone benefits. If nobody used trackers insurance premiums would be a fair bit higher.

Agreed but there's no need to monitor the driver's habits.

Whatever the driver want's to do is up to the driver. The tracker is optional on Discovery Insure.

The system is supposed to beneficial to the customer as they get rewards for not harshly accelerating, braking or speeding. This is because if you don't do those things then there's less chance of being in a severe accident and claiming massive amounts. So in the end the customer benefits with lower premiums as the average Discovery Insure driver will claim less than say the average Miway or Sanlam driver. So the average premium can also be lower.

In 10/20 years from now, most insurers will move onto systems like this as the technology improves and when they realize that they're taking on only the higher risk drivers. There will be a lot of selection bias as all the risky drivers who speed etc. will only use insurers without these systems in place. So their claims and premiums will soar making the business model unsustainable.

.

Discovery insisted on a tracker on our vehicles if we'd insure through them. I told them to sod off.

Business insurance or?

I just signed up this month and tracker (Vitality Drive addon with rewards etc.) was optional.

Personal. I am sure location and type of car plays a role as well. They might force trackers where it's known to them that X vehicle is a high highjacking risk. One of our cars is GTI.

Ah ok, that may be the case.

A lot of people go to Discovery for the monthly fuel rewards and weekly rewards. You can't be part of the reward system without the tracking device which monitors your driving and if you drive a lot (500km+ a month) it's definitely worth it.

Discovery Insure gave me a really good quote as well, was nervous about the tracking thing, didnt do my research. i tested it and got 5/5 with wifes car, doubt ill get anything decent in my own. Think I will re investigate without the option

I'm a 100% sure they'll use the information against. "oh - look - he left a bar at 6pm on Friday just before the fender bender on the way home - let's investigate more"

Did you simply decline to install / activate and did it affect your premium?
Answering this myself, just spoke with DI and was actually a very easy conversation. I politely declined the Vitality Fuel Rewards program which means they don't insist on their DQ-Tracker. Car already has a 3rd party Tracker installed for theft but not linked to DI. Without hesitation took off the requirement and premium went *down* by R150....and I can sleep soundly that I can now drive my performance vehicle at 130km/h and not be worried that Big Brother will be watching and tut-tutting!

When I first got my Golf R I was insured with Discovery Insure and I stuck with them until I managed to get the car insured through my employers group insurance policy where I only pay the fringe benefit tax. Discovery were expensive, their DQ track system at the time was hopelessly flawed and the one time I had a claim the entire process saw me wanting to tear my eyes out despite having a broker. I am not sure what they are like now but I won't be rushing back any time soon...

Fork Discovery. I wanted track day insurance for 1 day for a advanced driving course. R14K. For a Mk 6 Fiesta ST.
