High Ping/Lag/Latency after Switching to IPCop

Hey everyone

My flatmate and I are having insane problems with our ADSL this year, even after Telkom came out for a repair to the lines a couple of weeks ago. But since last year, actually, we've been suspecting that a lot of our problems are related to our router. So, finally, out of desperation, we decided to build our own router running IPCop. We're using http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...-International-and-Local-Bandwidth-with-IPcop as a guide, but have not yet completed the setup. But even with just one PPPoE connection, we are getting high lag:

... which is a tad high. We are still pretty much working from a base installation (latest patches and all) and have not added any shaping or intrusion detection or such. In fact, our experience is pretty much summed up here: http://www.ipcops.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=11904&view=previous

Does anyone have any ideas of what we can try?

On the plus side, my Pidgin is actually able to connect from under Linux for the first time in two weeks and Gmail loads with more vigour, so there are those initial improvements...

thats a normal ping for an int box

Rather do a traceroute, you'll get a better idea of the latency, and you'll see where it is occurring in the path.

And I agree with bboy - that's normal.

Here's a ping from a 512k diginet using IS:

Erm, ok...

Ok, my apologies. My browsing just seemed slow this morning, but I suppose that was just the entire SA checking their Facebook on a Monday morning... I had also pinged a local address earlier and also got a high ping, but that seems alright now.

Ping the ppp's default gateway for a better idea of the latency on the line.
