I have mweb adsl my ping rate is between 288-189 can anyone help::eek:

Can it be because everybody is downloading like crazy? :(

Read this stupid article:
Got bandwidth? Use it!
http://www.mybroadband.co.za/nephp/?m=show&id=5198

It's like we live in the USA or something!

mweb`s reply is that their adsl service is shaped, it is telkoms way of providing certain internet services with higher priority, now telkom has unshaped services which gives high priority to all services, IS THERE ANY OTHER INTERNET PROVIDER I CAN USE FOR BETTER SERVICE, TELKOM AND MWEB GIVES A NEW MEANING TO THE PHRASE `3RD WORLD`

MWEB and Telkom both use SAIX for connectivity so you won't see any difference between them. The only other option really is to get either a SAIX or Verizon unshaped account, IS-based accounts will have even more latency!

Some people also say Verizon Unshaped is better than SAIX, you can get it from here:

http://www.vanilla.co.za/

Never tried it myself.

Just had a look. Prices look very high for a unshaped service. But if you have lots of bucks then give it a try and let us know. I recall people bitched at how slow UUNET ADSL account are. But that was a few months ago.

You couldn't use it as a primary account really but for services like Skype etc. it might be useful. Not cheap though. Think UUNET/Verizon's a lot better since they ended the uncapped service.

what is a high price. Mweb R249 for 2 gb shaped, is that high or low

MWeb is extremely expensive, for vanilla Telkom ADSL (although unshaped is generally extremely expensive). What you pay for with MWeb is the warm fuzzy feeling that they are somehow better, which they are not. There is better support as well as better 'value added services' (often for free!) elsewhere.
Have a look at www.webafrica.co.za: 5GB account at webafrica = same price as 3GB at MWeb. I think you can get 3GB prepaid for around R200, which rolls over unused bandwidth. Search the forums here for comment on them - largely very positive.
