Hi All

I am in a bit of a jam. Went through the DIY ADSL Installation thingy.
Everything is up and running after screaming and shouting @ Telkom.

Setup:

Modem: Billion 5102SM
Connection Type: PPPoE
No. of PC's: 1

The problem I am having is in the following link http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=11484&highlight=miniport

Basically in that article they only way theh resolved the problem is by "replacing" the modem. BTW I have tested another modem with the same setup and it does work. The ADSL Telkom Line is fine and so is my Computer, network card, etc..

The problem is the modem. Now heres where I am stuck..??..??..??
I bought the modem from Digital Planet. I phoned BillionSA support and told them that their modem has a factory fault (I could be wrong). They told me to go back to Digital Planet and do it through them. I would have never guessed I would be getting the run around from anyone other then Telkom but in this instance its the other way around LOL.

I called Digital Planet and they told me to bring it in etc.. and they'll pass on back to Billion.

Now I have a couple problems with that.
1) I DONT FU****** like waiting... I have done enough waiting!!!!!
2) God alone knows when they'll get back to me.
3) Both Digital Planet and Billion have left a bad taste in my mouth.
4) I am seriously thinking of going to buy another modem as it would hopefully solve my problem latest by 4pm today.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions???
I have completely run out of ideas!!!!!!

Thanks
Moosa

I'm using a Billion 5102SM with no problem at all - however I'm using it via IPCop, and not directly with Windows (Connecting directly to ADSL with windows is a REALLY scary idea!).

Have you configured your IP address to be 192.168.1.x ? The modem's IP is 192.168.1.254 as far as I remember. This may make a difference under XP.

Also note that the 5102SM is a pure modem, it doesn't have built in firewall or routing capabilities.

Installation with IPCop was a breeze - configured red interface as PPPoE, no IP, and voila. The thing worked straight off.

Yup i've configured all the ip addressed correctly.. Unfortunately I still cant get it to work.

can you please give me some more info on the ipcop PPPoE application???

There's not much to say really.

If you have a spare PC with 2 nics, you can configure it as a firewall. Doesn't need to be any major hardware. Grab IPCop from http://www.ipcop.org - it's about a 40mb or so download, write the ISO, boot off the CD on the firewall box. 10 minutes to install, configure it as RED + GREEN, connect the RED nic to the LAN port on the modem, connect the GREEN nic to your hub or switch. Configure the red interface as PPPoE, configure green as whatever your local LAN ip is - I recommend 192.168.0.1 or some variant thereof.

Boot up the IPCop, connect to it with your browser on https://ipcopaddy:445, setup DHCP (if you want) and whatever other services you want, configure "Dial Up", setup your username and password for a PPPoE profile, save it. Click 'connect' on the home page, and off you go.

It's almost as simple as that. -- Provided you have a spare box to use. You don't need a screen & keyboard for it (just while installing), it can run "headless".

Just as a thought - how is the modem connected to your PC? Via a hub, or is it connected directly to your network card. If it IS connected directly to your network card, are you using a crossover cable?

Can you ping 192.168.1.254?

i used my last spare box for Media Center 2005 hehehe

that is too much of an effort....

All i need is a DSL modem with atleast 1 ethernet port.!! I got a Linksys WRT54G wireless router (WITH NO BUILT IN ADSL MODEM). I was running sentech but now i am switching... How hard is it to find a DSL modem out there that is just a modem and nothing else...

Well, I've also got a WRT54G - It's a broadband router. Configure this sucker to connect to your modem. It might solve your problems.
Connect the modem to the WAN port.

yup i am going to give that a try later on today... I am assuming that the windows PPPoE client doest not work well with South African ADSL or something to effect.

Using NetGear 834 (firewall router with built in ADSL modem). 4 ethernet ports. 834G is the wireless version but keeps the ethernet ports.

Tested my WRT54G with the Billion 5102SM and still did not work...
i upgraded the firmware on the modem and tested between Annex A & B.
New house so I am no sure whether the old tenants actually had ISDN on their line before.

I took the modem to my mates place and does not work. So it deffinately is a faulty modem :(

so close yet so far to my adsl :(

Hi Moosag,

Please note that the 5102SM is a pure modem (always in Bridge mode). You can not access the modem via a web browser and consequently you can also not upgrade the firmware. You can ping it however.

Please confirm if you indeed have a 5102SM.

To connect your 5102SM through a broadband router you can connect the 5102SM to the WAN port of the router (not the LAN port) and than configure the PPPoE settings on the router self.

Also please confirm that the ADSL led on the 5102SM is lit and not flickering.

Hope it helps.

Moosag,

nothing to add really except that investing in a second "backup" modem is a good thing since you never know when a power surge or lightning strike will take it out. Happened to me at the end of a month with many GB to my cap, and I couldn't download a byte !

Have a billion modem myself and can only say good things about it, except that you need some extra lightning protection.
