Hit & Run caught on camera, causes massive accident....

Maybe stolen car? Would explain irrational behaviour? Or on drugs.

Pfft. Every GTA and NFS Most Wanted player knows that its almost impossible to get away on a free way, you'll get boxed in. Should have pulled a 180 and driven on the shoulder against traffic to the exit he passed on the left.

Play moar vidya, ya n00b.

The perp :D :D :D sure looked confused when he got out of that car.

Since speculation abounds:
It's because he first thought about what he'd done :p

Glad to hear the people in the bakkie are okay though.

Most probably drunk then. Without the facts, worth mentioning the minor possibility of stroke/diabetic insulin shock or other medical causes, though. It happens.

He drove into the back of that bakkie, like he didn't see it. So my bet is on texting on his phone.......can also be drunk and texting.

The man who tried to flee was also still at the scene after the accident.

“He kept denying that he did anything wrong, even though he was shown a recording,” said Schoeman.

He deserves PKs until he gets that he did something wrong

Tshwane Metro Police Department's Isaac Mahamba could not confirm if action would be taken against the motorist who attempted to flee the scene.

Slow or useless, which are you?

Probably intoxicated and was driving like an idiot. I can't think of any other reason to run.

Surely he cant be serious. Trying to flee the scene is a automatic offense surely (even in s smaller crash, never mind a big one like this where a car flipped over). And they have video proof of him trying to flee.

The guy that shot the video this morning was being interviewed on Jacaranda when I was driving in at about 6:20. Seems the guy was driving crazy erratic from about Sandton. The guy started filming eventually to at least get the license plate. When the motorists managed to finally get the guy to stop after his hit and run he was completely out of it. The guy would not say if the guy was drunk or high but said something was clearly wrong with him and he was "not there". He was calm, a bit confused, and seemed completely unsure why the 3 motorists stopped him.

Anyways, the bakkie he hit is the one I feel sorry for. Driver was picked up by ambulance apparently. Hope he was OK. Serious kudos to the video taker and the 3 drivers who stopped him.

Now this just pisses me off:

Johannesburg - The three men who were in the bakkie that flipped on the N1 highway in Centurion are “doing okay under the circumstances,” a family member told News24.

The video, which has been widely circulated on social media, shows another motorist crashing into the bakkie before attempting to flee the scene of the crash.

In the video several motorists chase after the driver, blocking the vehicle, preventing him from escaping.

Adriaan Schoeman of First Road Emergency Services told News24 the accident happened on Tuesday at about noon, approximately 2kms after the Old Johannesburg Road offramp.

“The occupants had just climbed out of the vehicle when I stopped on the scene,” he said.

The driver of the bakkie (33), his father (63) and another family member were travelling from Johannesburg to Soshanguve when the accident happened.

“We are renovating my parents' house, they went to buy gutters in Johannesburg,” the driver’s sister, who asked not to be named, told News24.

“My dad is a pensioner and he doesn’t have a medical aid.”

“He was complaining about pain in his ribs, and had minor scratches on his hands."

She says her father was sent home from hospital with Panado around 20:30 on Tuesday evening.

Her brother, the driver of the vehicle who was slammed against the steering wheel in the accident, is complaining of chest pains.

The woman said she is considering taking them to a private physician.

“I just want to thank those guys who stopped the guy who was trying to flee. May the good Lord bless them.”

The man who tried to flee was also still at the scene after the accident.

“He kept denying that he did anything wrong, even though he was shown a recording,” said Schoeman.

Braam Kruger, Emer-G-Med’s general magager in Tshwane, said the occupants in the bakkie suffered only moderate injuries and they were transported to nearby hospitals.

“Trying to run away, that’s the worst,” the sister said. “At least stop to see if people are okay.”

My dad and myself used to drive around like this in a bakkie, buying things to renovate his house. Still do from time to time. This story strikes a nerve. Wish there was some way of donating to them if anyone knows of?

I remember seeing footage of a similar incident in the US - guy driving erratically for miles and seemingly spaced out until other motorists actually forced him to stop. Turned out he'd had a stroke. That, and the eyewitness accounts are the only reason why I suggest that in the absence of facts we shouldn't jump to conclusions.

I don't think this guy had a medical issue (stroke or whatever), using indicators and he is quite competent in getting moving (aka gears) again in the right direction.
