Hoarding stuff, what's the point?

Whatever dude, organize your life the way it suits you & don't break your pretty little head while trying to understand other people. We are not all the same and just because you do something one way doesn't mean the rest of us is doing it wrong mkay.

Here is why I keep stuff. Sometimes you want to watch something without wanting to wait for it to download 1st, and streaming may not be an option because you could have internet trouble ect. Having a local copy is just so much better.

It's all subjective. I know scores of people that spent thousands on dvd collections only for it to be antiquated & low quality compared to whats available now.

Yeah look I'm not one to understand regular collections either, but at least they make more sense that hoarding the internet as if it has some kind of value.

Totally agree with this, I only have a 1mb line and have DSTV. So to pay for streaming on top of it, is a little too expensive. And don't like waiting for downloads.

But if the show/movie is really crappy I will delete. I just hadn't had time to clean up

Im picky about what i watch, for ever 10 movies i download i only watch 1 or 2 within the same time frame of downloading it, the rest go into an Unwatched Folder. So its more of a keep for rainy days thing , than backup indefinitely.

Also , some things have a high rewatch value for me, thats why i keep entire seasons of series for years after they've come to an end.

Netflix does everything you mentioned above.

Netflix has a pretty crappy selection when it comes to series and they usually dont have the latest seasons etc (and no music). I can't stream reliably from netflix anyway so the point is moot.

I backup Kids movies because they tend to wanna watch things over and over again.
Then also movies that have follow-ons, so that i can rewatch the stories leading up to the new release to refresh my myself on the story. (eg - Lord of the Rings trilogy + hobbit , Starwars , Star Trek , Bourne series etc )

I have a shuffled Vlc playlist consisting of all the episodes of family guy, South park, American dad, Simpsons, whose line, spongebob, futurama, Cleveland show that I use as a "TV" and as white noise for while I sleep. I'm quite fond of this as you can't get such a playlist to stream anywhere online and I don't have fast Internet.

Wanted to delete all the crap movies, actually deleted 90% of my mp3s that I never listen to.

Mostly I keep the stuff I download the sake of my internet challenged friends.

For some people it's all about bragging rights. 1: "O I like that series" 2:"Ja, I got all the seasons and the gag reels and the bloopers and the behind the scenes documentary."

I had a bad case of reminiscence a few years ago and started downloading a **** load of old games from abandonware sites and torrents etc. End up only playing SQ5. It's all still on my hard drive somewhere, but don't think I'll ever play any of them ever again.

I'm one of those :o , fortunately I stopped that early though.

But you will probably only watch the good stuff, say 5-10% of your collection so you could get rid of the rest. I have plenty of stuff I stopped watching after 20mins because it's so crap.

I'm thinking of keeping a few gems that I might watch again and just wipe the rest of the crap as i will never ever watch it again.

Probably the same reason people hoard physical stuff. A compulsion of sorts that is easier to succumb to.

You make it sound as if I were judging people? :wtf:

I once, in a drunken stupor, bought the Alien Quadrillogy, at Musica, for R1400. And funny enough, I only feel the need to watch it when intoxicated. (wine + Sigorney Weavers =)

I blame my OCD :o

Compulsive hoarding is often considered a form of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) because between 18 and 42 percent of people with OCD experience some compulsion to hoard.

Hoarding can be more about fear of throwing something away than about collection or saving. Thinking about discarding an item triggers anxiety in the hoarder, so she / he hangs on to the item to prevent angst.

Many hoarders are perfectionists. They fear making the wrong decision about what to keep and what to throw out, so they keep everything.

I usually d/l a series or ten, then catch up whilst on annual leave - with series I tend to delete about 6 months after watching, just in case I need a quick re-cap before the next season.
Movies I tend to only keep the ones I like - if something is watched and is cr@p, then it's deleted.
I still run out of HDD space though as I tend to end up keeping more than I need, however always have an annual drive cleanup ;)

I keep just about everything I download, renamed, sorted and perfectly cataloged... I even download and save the Rotten Tomatoes review on all my movies. It's a collection simple as that, just wish I could afford enough space to backup everything properly.
