I've heard from a couple of people that they are receiving mails (could be a delay with the mail server) but I must admit Im not that impressed.

Whilst I do admit its a step in the right direction, I also feel that rather than going this route they should've dropped their pricing instead. That would have a massive impact on the market.

However, assuming this is true, do you guys feel this will have a positive impact on the South African broadband market? Possibly cause a rethink in Telkoms pricing structure. (I see Telkom are indirectly referenced in the mail, very very sneaky)

Quick Update: I just phoned iBurst support desk, and an agent by the name of Nayo answered the phone. I asked him to confirm this and he said that this is in fact true.

Now, now, I am really getting excited. However those helpdesk okies cant always be trusted so Im waiting for the 1st of December just to be sure.

Time will tell i suppose.
Nice Christmas present if it's true.

[Edit]
Phoned the helpdesk. The guy I spoke to said it will only be confirmed tomorrow. Something about a meeting.
So we'll see.

sounds like bullsh1t to me... surely they would make a bigger fuss about it then a simple email and how about wbs staff unable to confirm this type of stuff?

wait. this is wbs.

owell let's see... if it is true then it is good news :)

Well it sounds pretty true to me now.. with other people getting the email and with the site being updated (i also checked). This also sounds like something they would do, their prices have been a bit overpriced since the Telkom price drop so they can afford to do this and have spoken about upping to cap before.
Now we just await the implementeing of the 2mb service, if that comes Iburst will totally outway ADSL in SA, in my opinion it already does if these emails are true.
Yipee, so happy about this... even making my exams seem bearable.

I hope that it is true.

Well I went to my bandwidth usage on WBS's site and it says I have 1024MB minus what I've used .... I'm on a 1 Gig package.

Doesn't sound that legit ATM ... maybe they will update tomorrow?

iBurst doubles bandwidth and drops shaping

Reproduced from blackdot.co.za

Well done to IBURST
Broadband is fast becoming the next digital divide, and today the 1st of November 2005 is indeed a very sad day for the South African broadband user.

So to brighten up your day and in order to ensure that the South African broadband community keeps up with the ever changing face of the Internet, Wireless Business Solutions is ready to take South African broadband to a new and exciting level.

We are excited and happy to announce that effective 1st December 2005, all future and existing iBurst subscribers will have their bandwidth usage cap doubled at no extra cost whatsoever.

What this means:

i-Go subscribers will have their bandwidth usage capped at 1 Gigabytes. The package will be renamed iBurst gig1.

iBurst gig1 subscribers will have their bandwidth usage capped at 2 Gigabytes. The package will be renamed iBurst gig2.

iBurst gig3 subscribers will have their bandwidth usage capped at 6 Gigabytes. The package will be renamed iBurst gig6.

iBurst gig6 subscribers will have their bandwidth usage capped at 12 Gigabytes. The package will be renamed iBurst gig12.

iBurst gig9 subscribers will have their bandwidth usage capped at 18 Gigabytes. The package will be renamed iBurst gig18.

Furthermore we are happy to finally be able to officially announce that all existing and future accounts will no longer be subjected to any port shaping policies.

It's time to celebrate a new beginning in South African broadband.

WBS and iBurst are proud to be the first to take these first steps into a new South African Internet with you and hope that this is only the beginning of a whole new and exciting world of iBurst

HANG ON PEOPLE. THINK ABOUT THIS.

What if WBS are going the hard capping ala telkom route?
Nothing is mentioned about 64k Thottled service after cap.

We might be getting completely cut off after cap.
Think about it. If people use their 3 Gigs in the first week (even day) of the month, they sit on 64K and get a couple more gigs maybe.

It might be cheaper for WBS to double the caps and cut off the service there after.

i.e 3 Gigs + 5 Gigs at 64K is more expensive than 6 Gigs and then you are cut off. Forcing people to have to buy bandwidth makes them more money.

I don't know. I'd love to see this as a good thing, but I'm dreading it.

Oh and if true Crash is on the mark.
That was my first thought!
Look to your average joe 6gb at blah price looks better than 3gb at blah price. No one thinks about cap well until they get capped.
