Only sufficient penetration into the market where VoIP to VoIP interconnectivity becomes sizeable will place a rate pressure on these charges.
The best these VoIP suppliers can do is to provide decent deals and actually tell businesses to do inter-business calls via their VoIP solution.
A Skype-ZA-VoIP gateway at decent rates could also assist in getting interconnecting charges down.
How creative can the VoIP suppliers get in making it work?

Could't someone possibly let these guys know that I***a has no hope in hell of convincing Telkom to drop prices.
By the way isn't ICASA a "regulator". Shouldn't that mean that they could tell Telkom what to do right now!!! if it were necessary? or is it because Telkom is a public company with shareholders that makes life so difficult?

Ja and the biggest shareholder is government; wouldn't want to damage their cash cow, I mean, who's going to pay for the mercs and the trips to dubai otherwise?
And yes notice in Europe regulator coughs and everyone pays attention before having their prices and practices mandatory changed. Right now.

She says Icasa is unlikely to stop working on this until the rate is “in line with the real costs of providing interconnection”.

that becuase there regulator actually have powers to do stuff, unlike icasa who cant even organnise a pissup in berwey....

year 4 - cost drop by 2c ( interconnection fee is, no it not)
year 5 - same red tape
year 6 - ok we better start doing something..
year 7 - red tape for the doing somehthing.

year 9 price suddenly hits the inline with the international market place.
year 10 - all to late and country is super dooper fooper stuffedzor.........
