W Cape farm workers set to strike
2013-01-04 16:01

Cape Town - Farm workers in the Western Cape will take to the streets next week following failed pay negotiations with Agri-SA and government, Cosatu provincial secretary Tony Ehrenreich said on Friday.

"We're at the point where the mandate from workers is to resume the strike on 9 January 2013," said Ehrenreich.

He said Agri-SA and individual farmers had not offered much in terms of negotiations, and workers had no choice but to continue their industrial action.

Workers are demanding pay of R150 a day. Many are currently earning under R80 a day.

The strike was suspended in 2012, following an undertaking that negotiations would continue between workers' representatives and individual farmers.

This had apparently proved unsuccessful.

At least two people were killed during protests in farming areas between 27 August and 4 December last year.

I love SA.

how does one survive on R80 a day :wtf:

Reminds me of the time the learners went picketing at schools for some or other reason, but not during holidays. LOL.

And Ehernreich is a top clown. What a cock.

So the seasonal workers will be bussed in again. Lovely burn some more farms.

i would like too see you survive of R80 a day...doing hard labor.

If you're given free housing and your children are cared for etc you could live on that. Not much change of saving for anything but you could live.

Let's take away accommodation, food & schooling or wait lets put that into financial perspective...

Easy, give them R150 but require rent and other free benifits to be terminated. Often these people kick the, selfs in there own knees

Best idea, sad thing is it will be the families who suffer as I can guarantee that the workers don't have the knowledge to manage their money correctly, especially after having been given it as part of their work.
