So I found these, ordered 2
https://www.ebay.com/itm/5-24VDC-Wa...317450?hash=item4d71d5c78a:g:gwUAAOSwcNxa0~7j

Now I need a wifi 8266 board, and will make my own sensors according to http://www.instructables.com/id/ESP8266-Water-Leak-Detector-MQTT-Homie modified not to use homie, just mqtt :D

So smartkit dudes - what usb powered wifi 8266 dev boards do you have?

So busy planning this now. Jojo tank isn't too near any power sources... Need a way to run this thing. Busy researching 8266 power saving stuff, and pondering getting a solar usb battery pack..
This is fun stuff!

We've been umming and ahhing about Wemos and NodeMcu boards because they can run Tasmota.

Love the wemos boards. Dirt cheap and you can program them with Ardiuno IDE which makes it super simple for projects.

I have about 15 of these around the house running various sensors.

Question is how many we'd sell, are there enough DIYers in South Africa?

I would totally get some. Lots of little tinkering fun to be had.

Lol where were you a week ago?
Yeah I dont mind, send me a PM. Still going to take quite abit of work to make a proper solution.

Have you come any closer to making a working backplate yet?
Or perhaps anyone else...?

It's not quite as easy as it looks to make it perfect. Im busy working on V3. First one was too tight, second too loose. Im still working on getting the over extension on the clips right. Once i have the front right I want to see if I can recess the back a little so it's more forgiving to uneven walls.

Can imagine it being quite frustrating getting it just right. Well I'm standing on the sidelines rooting for you ;)
We should all chip in for your beer and snacks while you work at it.

OK thread is getting a little quiet so here is an update.

As before, I have been putting more time into the frame and I am reasonably happy with the last version. Fit is good, recesses match. It however is still not a perfect solution, but its much better. The switch just doesnt mate very well with the included backing plate. Looks fine when its in the box, but soon as its on the wall its too easily pulled out of shape. Even if one looked to improve on the existing backing plate, chances are the you will just break the lugs off, and then you poked. Chances are, most installs you will still be able to grip the switch and pull it off. One could build up the sides, but I think that would look ugly.

Back pressure plays a big role and the relays take up alot of space in a small cavity, if there are too many wires, its not going to work. But after all that bad news the functional model is about as far as I will take it. I left off the inner recess as catering for that would make the plate a lot thicker which I dont like, so this would need to be mounted on a flat surface.

This is the progress from the first chopped backing plate to V4.

V5 will work on the asthetic and I'm just getting a quote on mass producing as it doesnt make financial sense to just print off 10 at a time. Will keep everyone updated.

Will keep you all updated as I move to the finished product.

Anyone seen a cheap electronic lock replacement for doors? Our domestic has lost her house keys again.

I've seen a few that are home automation compatible - but cost about R9k

I kept looking when I was doing my renovations... and could just never find anything that was vaguely cost effective, or that would work decently in SA doors....

Yeh - I've found a few, but the mechanism is different to our current locks, which means probably replacing the entire door.

Yup, and then of course the issue of getting power to the unit in a way that doesn't interfere with things... last thing I would want is a battery operated lock that konks out while we're out

Well this seems like an ideal opportunity for a local startup.
