Not intending to be lazy, but finding the posts including search is a mission with results not being useful. Really, wonder why the MyBB app on phone, doesn't have feature to save posts as favourite, so you can refer back to them when you need it . This thread has too many good posts which meet this criteria.

Yes a normal alarm system magnet sensor does the job.

Mine is fitted on the rail where the pull cord release meets the motor.

The only problem with that is that I only know when it’s fully open, and everything else in between is considered “closed”.

It was a temporary install to test and kind of just stuck around.

In a perfect world you would have one as low as possible on the door so you know if it’s left open even an inch.

With my position it works like that.

Only shows closed if fully closed. Open if the door is an inch open
 
Where did you position it on the gate motor?

I'm thinking of the bottom part of the motor housing and back end if the rail.
Might have to glue it though

I put a piece of hard plastic across the rail right where it attaches to the motor to hold one side of it. The other part is on the pull cord housing.

Yeah, they have four buttons I think.

But, if button 1 on one remote is paired with a function... Will button 1 on the other remote also be paired?

Oh right.

Yeah I made a small cut on the top housing of my motor to slip the wires through and then used some of that fancy ass red sellotape to stick it on the outside.

Some patience to plug it in and feed the wire while closing the thing and that was done.

Then I glued the magnet part to the gate rail and it’s been stuck there for a year, possibly two now without issue.

Like an idiot I weed eated the small piece of wire that stuck out at some point by sheer random magic and then re-engineered it a little bit.

Logitech Harmony Hub. Its basic but it works. I just use for it turning off/on and preset values, ie Heat 23, Cool 21. You could program in every AC control but that would be a pain.
 
I am using the normal magnetic contact you use for alarms on my double garage door. I connected the one end as close to the floor on the guide rail as I could with double sided tape and the other on the door at the bottom when closed so that they line up. If the door opens about 8 cm it shows me as open, and same for closing so I know it is at least lower than 8cm when it says closed.

Hi, I have the harmony hub, and I hardly use it as I can't seem to understand how to get it to work. Please can I ask you how you set it up to control your aircon. Did you teach it the remote codes or does it have to be on the Harmony list of devices already?

My Panasonic aircon is not on the list, I had to teach it the commands. After that you can tie the Harmony Hub into Home Assistant and it fires off the commands.
 
Smart wifi light switches.

Any suggestions/recommendations ito smart light switches?

My lights mostly fluorescents and old halogen lights. So prefer installing smart wifi light switches.

mine is like this also, except i know when the door is closed only, anything else is open/opening. to me closed is more important. I managed this even though it is also on the top rail.

What is the difference between a wifi switch and a smart wifi switch?

you get ones that are built as light switches, like the T1 for example, same thing, just specialized to be a light switch fitting.
