Had a toothache from hell last night. I am too afraid of dentists so that is not an option for me - and I have been lucky thus far to have had manageable teeth. Last night, however, a tooth at the back of my bottom jaw which is decaying, is starting to become problematic. Last night it felt like the nerves in the roots were been burnt. Does anyone know how to get rid of the pain should it recur?

Do you have a leatherman and a steady hand?

If that doesnt appeal you'll need to go to the dentist.

go see a dentist. you dont want to allow it to get infected. Then you'll know what hell really feels like.

Grow a pair, bite the bullet, see a dentist.

Can you give me a pain rating for the above option. The scale I went thru last night was almost a 9 - so I would consider the above if it's less. Anything more would be comatose.

Drank half a bottle of clove oil - and that reduced my mouth and about half my upper body into a degree of numbness

Go the pharmacy and ask for:

Gen-Payne capsules:
S3:contents per capsule
codeine 10mg + Ibuprofen 200mg + paracetamol 250mg (take 2)

I recently bought these over the counter after having a tooth extracted,
it is a very effective painkiller and was recommended for tooth-ache and
dental ache.

Gen-Pyne sounds like myprodol, or mybulen.... very effective pain killers!
No one likes the dentist, but a mouth infection can be very serious, so just go see one!!!!

Good meds but it wont fix the prob. if that tooth rots any futher you're talking about surgery. Removing the tooth, possible piece if the gum surrounding the tooth.

a Pleasure, hope it helps.

I also until recently had an irrational fear of the dentist,
eventually the condition of my teeth reached a point
where I had to stand up for myself lol

So I went, Monday I had a tooth extracted and at 3pm this afternoon
I'm having a filling.

I hope to get another appointment soon, because now that I've
experiened modern dentistry I'm not the biggest coward in the
universe anymore.

When I arrived for the extraction, very nervous, the dentist rubbed some
delicious strawberry gel onto my gums, my eyes like saucers, then he pricked
my gums around the fossil, (light pricks, hardly detectable).

Through this I had my eyes closed and my mp3 player on, listening to Yab-Yum Nocturnal - psy trance, I felt some tugging, then some fiddling, and voila mon cheri, the most terror inducing event was over, without much pain or discomfort.

If I can do it, you can.

Also remember that tooth decay and abscesses can and will reach the point where they become lethal should you not take antibiotics. Also, had you gone to a dentist and had regular check-ups, chances are it could've been prevented.

If left untreated, a severe tooth abscess may become large enough to perforate bone and extend into the soft tissue eventually becoming osteomyelitis and cellulitis respectively. From there it follows the path of least resistance and may spread either internally or externally. The path of the infection is influenced by such things as the location of the infected tooth and the thickness of the bone, muscle and fascia attachments.

External drainage may begin as a boil which bursts allowing pus drainage from the abscess, intraorally (usually through the gum) or extra orally. Chronic drainage will allow an epithelial lining to form in this communication to form a pus draining canal (fistula). Sometimes this type of drainage will immediately relieve some of the painful symptoms associated with the pressure.

Internal drainage is of more concern as growing infection makes space within the tissues surrounding the infection. Severe complications requiring immediate hospitalisation include Ludwig's angina, which is a combination of growing infection and cellulitis which closes the airway space causing suffocation in extreme cases. Also infection can spread down the tissue spaces to the mediastinum which has significant consequences on the vital organs such as the heart. Another complication, usually from upper teeth, is a risk of septicaemia (infection of the blood), from connecting into blood vessels, brain abscess, (extremely rare) or meningitis, (also rare).

Depending on the severity of the infection, the sufferer may feel only mildly ill, or may in extreme cases require hospital care.

Go to the dentist, have him numb your mouth and either treat or remove the tooth. It's an hour's misery at most then it's over.

LOL

Dude go to the dentist, it really is not that bad. Go and get mypodol from the chemist you can get the generic of it for like 30 bucks for 50.

If you are not going to the dentist pop 2 of those 4 times a day for as long as your tooth gives you trouble.

Then if you develop an abscess and you do not get it treated you can die.

So go to the dentist :D.

As I see it you've got three options.
  1. Grow a pair like Chaos said
  2. General anesthesia & have everything done in one go (very expensive)
  3. Hypnosis

Anything else is just fixing the symptoms not the problem. It will only get worse if you do nothing.

Yes, its a myprodol generic.

eh, I don't think its safe to drink that much. Rather keep it in the mouth & spit it out again.

Lol, funny thing is, is that actually does work! I pulled out the tooth of one of my friends last year at a 4 day long new years party with my leatherman, just wrapped a cloth drenched in vodka around the tooth, had another friend hold down my friend, then yanked and pulled until it came out.

NOT RECCOMENDED.

That gave me chills
