Home cure for a toothache

I think I had the same troubling tooth as you.

One of my bottom back teeth had decayed quite badly and I left it as I was supposed to have it removed last year already ,but was too afraid. It was supposed to be removed under sedation in hospital and then cut out.

Two days ago I finally was convinced by my gf to go to her dentist. The dentist struggled almost a full hour to pull the tooth as the roots was really big and deep. He almost dislocated my jaw the way he was wrestling with the tooth. He had to cut it in half and there was alot of bleeding.

My jaw and gum now hurt like a (*^&*(^(&^! I will never EVER go to a dentist again.

Dude really glad it's over and that I'm not you :-)))

Thanks - just back from pharmacy - I had just about convinced myself myself to get in the car again and go visit the dentist..now I'm rethinking. I did go to a dentist about 8 years ago..and whilst there asked him for a minute by minute breakdown of what he was doing. When he deviated from what'd said - I started to panic..decided then never to visit one again. I got some pain killers and some of the colgate with the cleaning stuff that dentists use. Going to try DIY for a few days and see how it pans out.

Why not ask a friend to go with you?

An alternative is to go to the dentist, have him check it out, tell you what he needs to do, and if you're not keen on being lucid for the procedure, ask him to do it in hospital and put you under general anaesthetic.

This might just be my impression and I could be right or wrong, but you're just going to make things worse. What does "DIY" mean? You know how much of a **** up you'll cause if you damage one of your adjacent teeth?

Just have the dentist do it... It's quick, it's simple and all you have to do is lie back and wait it out.

It's ridiculous how difficult you insist on making such a common procedure...

I promise you--it's nowhere near as bad as you're psyching yourself up to believe it is.
 
I just returned from having a filling done.

Again the delicious gel, very light prick
and then:

I closed my eyes and put on my mp3 player loud because I know that drillingmachine
they tunnelled through to France from England with, was about to make havoc in my mouth.

One and half minute of high pitch drilling, fiddle, clean, vacuum, then another 180 seconds of heavy drilling (to the core of my greatest fear - that the drill slips - but it does not), then a fiddle, a bit of picking and cementing, then another 40 seconds of the high pitch drill again - and it was over.

I never felt pain once, the only thing to fear was fear itself.
He also smoothed over a tiny chip in my front tooth.

I have another appointment on 12 January to have my teeth
sandblasted with orange tasting oral sands, to blast away
nicotine stains.

It's over, it's over and I'm going to have a fantastic closure to
this year - I conquered my greatest fear - the dentist

Yeah I think I'll call my cousin whose a dentist to do it - that way I can swear and kick and scream as much as I want...

Don't lie to the dudette. Have you ever had a tooth extracted the normal way?

I't hurts like a mofo and when you lie on that butcher's chair with your mouth wide open and the dentist is visibly getting exhausted while he struggles to get it out then you say a little prayer even if you are not religious.

I just wonder why he did not take a xray first and then he would have seen how big the roots of the tooth was and I could have had it removed in hospital

i agree - some of them are sadistic - probably wait gleefully for the next fearful patient - and then try to make the procedure as complicated and as painful as possible..yeeeouch
 
If you do go to the dentist, be sure to tell them what painkillers you are on.

At 10x the cost yes.

I've got some dentist horror stories too, but I don't think this is the time & place. arab is scared enough as is.
 
I was deathly afraid of a dentist. And being all tough and manly and trying to be the meanest mofo alive, one cannot relate to one's friends that a pencil-neck geek with a surgical dremmel scares the seven out of you.

I was in such pain about 8 months ago that I could barely talk. One of my lady friends insisted I go to a dentist while I threw away all my macho in confessing my greatest fear and she (bless her) offered a solution that anyone here must consider. The SADA has several specialist branches (like Orthodontics) and one of these is paediatric dentistry (yes, dentists for babies). Find a dentist that is a member of the SA Paediatric Dentist Association: they undergo specialist education and methods for treating children and big, tough sissies like myself.

I went in, sat down and told him I was terrified and would rather just amputate my jaw and he told me to relax, promised me a sucker, said "open wide" followed by a few "aha"s and one or two "ooooh"s and finally a "there we go all done"

Painless. I also insisted on my sucker...

There's a good dental technician down Toti side, she's quick and painless. I'd to ask if she'd taken the tooth out yet, she was already working on the next one.

BTW you're not supposed to drink the clove oil :eek: soak in cotton wool and place it on the tooth. Whisky also helps numb it.

If the pain is really that bad and you don't get it sorted it will just get worse.

I went and had some major work done without any painkillers. Hurt like hell during the procedure but was fine after an hour or two. Couldn't chew on it for 2 weeks though.
