Home Invasion thread

To expand on the above.

Outer layer:
The community security initiatives (neighbourhood watch and community/private security partnerships) and the police to a certain extent. You can be linked in via a walkie talkie (best) or a whatsapp or similar chat group (less ideal than walkie talkie in my opnion), and it could support you in outside-of-yard, in-yard and in-house security and other emergency situations.

Perimeter:
Secure wall or fence with physical (spikes, razor wire or ribbon, rotating spikes, etc) and/or electronic security (electric fence, perimeter beams, things that will give warning, linked to siren or alarm system, if tampered with/broke/cut). These can still be switched on while you are in yard, busy braaing and such, while your yard beams and such are off, and armed robberies have occurred during braais. Vehicle gates must be secure from being lifted and such.

Yard:
Dogs (big and small mix might be ideal, someone said the small ones are the alarm, because they generally more lively and alert, while the big ones are the armed response).
Garden beams and other sensors linked to siren or alarm.
Good lighting.

House:
Burglar bars and security doors. And use them, no use keeping your security sliding door unlocked most of the time "for the dog to go in and out" or whatever.

Inside house:
Security door separating bedrooms and rest.
Alarm system.
Remember smoke detectors in bedrooms and hallway, a big fire extinguisher or 2 or 3, and some of those lights that go on when the power fails.

Chances are good that thet country you go to will also have house thefts.

Get a couple of dogs, big ones too. Train them well.

The difference is that in other countries criminals are caught and punished. Here they continue to roam the streets.

Home break-in and theft is nowhere near the same as home invasion.

Yes, home break-in occurs in other countries, but home invasions are rare, and then of course they're likely to be caught and face lengthy jail terms, but that deterrent doesn't exist here.

keep a safe in the house that explodes if opened

if they tell you to open it, ask them how they know your not going take a gun from it.

Even more reason to want to kill you...

Even more reason to want to kill you...

and them being there is not a reason to want to kill them?

hopefully the blast would be great enough for an escape attempt.

or go further with a nerve gas that you have the antidote for in a molar, something like those spy movies.

Add a moat and guard towers to that list. IR lighting as well?

Those first two would be more expensive than the rest of my list combined. And what's the use of the IR lighting unless you added CCTV? Which I forgot to put on my list, and is only to be done when you have done some of the others.

I think you forgot the draw bridge :)

Why give them an easy way to get across the moat? :erm: One mustn't leave ones property, so as to be safest. Supplies can be ordered online and airdropped in...

sure. I forgot all about the latest delivery drones and one can get a helicopter to get around and you can put some crocodiles in the moat. :D

Unless they know there WAS something of real value stashed somewhere they won't bother.

Good opportunity to upgrade security.

Surely there's more than one gang operating at any particular location.

If you really want to know if your security is up to scratch.

1. Switch on your alarm if you have one or skip to (2)
Pretend you locked your keys in the house and get in the house, even if you have to break a window to do so.
If you can get in you know where the first flaw is.
2. keep alarm switched off and retry above.
