What a **** way to live. What is the kids are outside playing and what not? I have my gun on me at all times and the dogs roam the plot during the day. I refuse to lock myself and the kids in doors. You seriously don't venture outside, not even on weekends?

They are opportunistic if they want to gain entry they will. Gate locked or not.

Well, then you are prepared aren't you? If you are not prepared to be prepared (yes, lol), then lock the security gate while you snooze on the couch during the Sunday afternoon grand prix or else when you wake up the crim could be standing there in front of you, gun already pointed at you.

The kids playing outside... well, luckily the electric fence is on and the dogs are around.

Thanks for answering that, I was driving at the time.

Living in a gated estate no guarantee of safety - expert
A senior researcher at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) has cautioned that living in a gated estate did not mean complete safety.

Speaking to News24 on Thursday, senior researcher for the Governance Crime Justice Division at ISS Johan Burger said criminals were always on the lookout for opportunities to strike, but also focussed on opportunities "that will make the risk of crime worth their while".

Burger's comments come after the upmarket luxury estate Zimbali, north of Durban was on Wednesday infiltrated by two armed assailants, leaving one of its residents with an open head wound.

The resident was attacked at 05:00 when he and his wife were approached by two unknown men at gunpoint, police spokesperson Lieutenant Shooz Magudulela said.

Magudulela said the assailants threatened to kill the man when a fight broke out between them.

"One suspect opened fire and assaulted the complainant on the head with the firearm. He sustained an open wound on the head and was taken to hospital for medical attention. The suspects fled the scene on foot and nothing was taken."

A case of attempted murder was opened at Umhlali police station for investigation. No arrests have been made.

When approached, the Zimbali Estate Management Association (Zema) declined to comment. The estate is home to the likes of former SA cricketer Shaun Pollock and singer Patricia Lewis.

Not safe in your estate

Burger said robbers targeted homes that "appear to have a sense of wealth".

"They look for indications of this in the form of homes and types of cars. An estate of this type is known for housing wealthy people. That in itself makes it a good target.

Burger said people have a false sense of security with deterrents such as high walls and access gates.

"This works for the basic criminal, but they are organised criminals who would recruit members of security companies, especially [the] security for your property. They either recruit or plant someone in that area."

Burger said well-oiled criminal organisations are made up of a range of experts, however they also analysed the home they would infiltrate.

"They will map the movements of the home. They will know who lives in the home, possible risks of attacking, [and whether the] inhabitants [would be] prepared to resist? They will map out patterns and thereafter strike."

Burger said criminals first seek out cash and jewellery – thereafter any other easy to carry items that could be sold on the black market.

It all comes down to risk managment.
I still take the kids for walks in Tokai forest / take them to the park & duck pond down the road but like you I am always armed + go when there are other people around.

A mate of mine, who lives in a well to do - closed estate in Durbanville with all the modern security stuff ( electric fences / spiked security gates etc.) - yet these MF's still get in. luckily he has perimeter beams set up around his property. So the lower perimeter beam alarm goes off around 2am last Sunday - plenty time for him to get dressed - grab his 9mm and wait for them at the top of the stairs in the dark. As soon as they touched the door he stuck his 9mm straight in their faces! I won't repeat what he said to them - but suffice to say they feared for their lives!! tied them up and called the police.

interestingly he has had more attempted burglaries than I have had in the same time period +-20yrs and I live in a more vulnerable open space area

Wounded father lies helpless as young daughter is shot dead by intruder

Port Elizabeth - A father lay helpless with bullet wounds as his 12-year-old daughter was shot dead in their family home in Bethelsdorp in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday evening.

Bethelsdorp police said an intruder forced his way into the home after the father refused him entry.

"The family was asleep when they heard loud knocking on their front door. The 43-year-old father refused to open the door and the suspects went around to the back of the house, kicked open the door and entered," Colonel Priscilla Naidu said in a statement.

The father was shot three times and wounded, while his daughter was shot once and died, Naidu said.

The motive of the shooting was unknown and police were investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.

"Police condemn this attack and senseless killing of an innocent child in the strongest terms. All means possible will be used to thoroughly investigate this case and bring the culprits to book," police said.

'Have a nice day,' house robbers tell blindfolded Constantia victim

South African extreme swimmer Ryan Stramrood became the latest victim of a spate of house robberies currently plaguing the upmarket suburb of Constantia in Cape Town.

Stramrood had been carrying fitness supplements in a box for a preparation race, when three men ambushed him at his car near his home early last Saturday around 06:00.

It is believed the attackers gained entry by cutting a hole in the perimeter fencing of the security estate where he lives.

The swimmer, 42, told News24 on Friday he was lucky to be alive.

"As I got to my car, I opened the boot and three guys were metres away from me," he said.

"One guy put a gun to my head and another a knife to my side and said 'money, money, money'.

"They took everything, they took my watch off my arm and it lasted about two or three minutes outside."

Just before it was over, they asked him who he lives with.

"I was truthful and said I live alone," he said, as his 4-year-old son stays with his mother. Thereafter the robbers took his house keys and walked him back to his unit in a complex.

They walked him to his bedroom. While one of the robbers held a gun to his head, they ransacked his house and stole computers, laptops, hard drives and phones.

He managed to convince the men not to take his credit cards, as they would just be traced....

Nataniel pretends to sleep while house is ransacked

In a lengthy Facebook statement Nataniël recounted pretending to be asleep while thieves robbed him of R100 000 worth of personal belongings. Taking to the social media platform Nataniël revealed that he recently had a spate of bad luck, which caused him to miss a show for the first time in 29 years.

This included being hospitalised for exhaustion and shock, after the place he was staying at was robbed and thieves made off with R100K of his personal items.

According to Nataniël he was not feeling well and was advised to rest after taking medication. While asleep, the entertainer was woken up by voices.

"I fell asleep and woke up almost immediately, from voices somewhere in the place where I was staying," he said. Nataniël said that at first he thought that the voices belonged to cleaners from the venue but he realised that something was wrong when someone yanked open his bedroom door.

"I pretended that I was sleeping, I was afraid that they had guns. The door was immediately closed and the intruders started yelling at each other that they should leave. Someone yanked the door open again, and grabbed my bag and cellphone," he explained. Shortly after the thieves had left he jumped up but was too late as they were already in their getaway vehicle.

"Back inside I realised that they also stole more than R40 000 in cash, my ID, passport, wallets, drivers licence, two leather bags, four designer jackets and my theatre bag with my microphone, shoes, make-up, etcetera - quite a lot more than R100 000 worth of damages."

After the ordeal Nataniël had to be rushed to hospital where he had to be treated for a combination of sleep deprivation, exhaustion and shock.

The good news is that the performer is back home and is in better spirits.

Man dies protecting family from robbers in Meredale

Johannesburg - A 66-year-old Meredale man was killed during a home invasion in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said that medics had been scrambled for the emergency call at the home at around 03:00.

“It is believed that the man was trying to defend his family when he was shot. Paramedics found him in a room with injuries to the head,” she said.

“Sadly there was nothing that could be done for him and he was declared dead. The rest of the family, which included three young children, were unharmed,” Bodasing added.

She said that police were investigating the murder.
