Cape Town – Lymen Mlambo spends his days fixing potholes. But he’s not a municipal worker. Homeless and jobless, he collects change from strangers to buy cement and improve Haartbeespoort roads.

His maths doesn’t always add up and some days he ends up with a cement bag but no food to eat.

Now, with the help of a concerned resident, things may be looking up.

It’s hard to miss the 25-year-old in his neon yellow reflective vest. He is often spotted stooping over a bucket in the road or lugging a heavy cement bag on his shoulder.

Wondering whether someone had contracted him to do the job, small business owner Vanessa Courtenay stopped her car to chat to him on Saturday.

“He said: ‘no ma’am. I am doing this on my own.’ That’s when I burst into tears.”

Awesome.

That is quite something! Well done to this guy and may he find a pothole of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Please don't encourage this...

Same thing happened in zim and now it's chaos with these people blocking off roads to "fix" potholes, this usually involves filling them with stolen bricks that then come out and smash cars to bits.

There's also a reason why the council doesn't fill potholes with concrete, it doesn't work and breaks up within days. To fix it properly they then have to smash out all the **** he's put in and this takes more time and money.

A life without purpose is no life at all.

Awesome that he gave himself a useful purpose.

Can only hope that he prospers from this point onwards.

You sir, are an ass.

A pothole repairs company that wished to remain anonymous has since offered to help.

He will apparently receive full training on Friday and have his first bag of repair mix sponsored.

He wll learn now

I appreciate the guy's intentions, but something tells me filling a pothole with cement isn't the greatest idea.

From what I read in the article, a proper pothole repair company has taken him under their wing (training, materials, etc).

That's a positive contribution.

He has a valid point, came across a 'gang' of young people attempting to fix pot holes in street near Welkom, they then harass you and block off the road when you don't give them something.

This can turn into a dangerous situation.

You see I'm speaking from experience, you're speaking out of sympathy... Yes he's in a **** situation and should be commended for trying to get out of it but his "repairs" make the road surface more dangerous and this story and the encouragement will cause this practice to spread and then we're in for a world of trouble.

But hey what do I know, not like I've lived through this before...

Yip, on the rural roads in the Transkei area, youths armed with spades "patch" a stretch of dirt for 100m then demand cash from motorists.

Regular occurrence north of the border

Is pothole fixing an inherent Zimbabwean trait?

Haha, it must be. Although I wouldn't trust us, the roads back home are shyte.

Misplaced sympathy and guilt stroking has already landed SA with robot beggars and traders that provide a convenient spot for criminals to hide. Now you want to start encouraging private individuals to cordon/block off sections of the road to "fix" them?

With all due Sympathy, I have to agree.

In Vereeniging they are doing the same thing, filling in and removing the same hole all day long. I'm pretty sure soon the guys will be making the holes themselves just to fill it up again.

The council still fills the potholes with cement in PE.
They fill the hole, don;t block traffic and the cement get's displaced causing a bump.
Genius.
