Honda or Toyota

My mom's Conquest has 487000 K's on the clock and never been properly looked after. Still gets 14 to 16 ks per liter. I drive a 2002 180GSX Corolla. But if I was going to buy new now I would probably get the Honda. It's just nicer looking. But I don't think you could go wrong with either. :D

Your mothers Toyota is 19voetsek, they were very good cars back then , today they try too hard with all the fancy gadgets and dont get it right. they only good for reliability, not quality.

honda is far superior ...

Argh Toyota isn't as bad as what is said with quality ;)

I've had a Civic, Corolla and RunX are they're all pretty similar - except for one friggen rattle on my RunX that irritates the living shyte out of me daily :(( But that aside - I think they're similar :)

JK8 - what is the performance pedigree of Honda? The Vtec ... ?

The new Civic looks much more exciting then a corolla or runX inside and out

I've driven mostly Honda my whole life. I love 'em. Steering feedback = awesome. I've had plenty of chance the drive my dad's old 1999 Toyota 160i. Engine is nice, and it's known for reliability, but the steering feels detached, and shifts feel a bit vague. After a week or so you get used to it though... at that time I had my old 1995 Honda, and except for the engine, nothing on the Toyota could impress me more than on that old Honda.

Today I drive a 2004 Honda Sedan, the model just before the current one. It's got a slightly smaller engine, but it's awesome. I test drove a 2005 Toyota RunX 160i before going for a test drive with a similar Honda to mine. I left underwhelmed. It ticks off all the boxes on the specifications, and has a good track record, but there was no wow :/

I got into a 2003 Honda with double the mileage, and I was hooked! Bought mine not long after.

Best part of my day? Driving to/from home :)

EDIT - Ah yes. Servicing Hondas could be slightly more expensive, but I don't have figures to support that theory :p My 120K major service was something like R3500, which to me seems a bit steep.

Whatever you do, take it for a test drive first. You'd be amazed how different two 'similar' cars are. Even my grandmother's 2001 Toyota Corolla feels markedly different to my dad's 1999 model.

I haven't driven the new Civics yet, but other than rear visibility it was awesome. If I had my current salary when I bought the other one, I probably would've driven the newer model.

You cant really go wrong with any of the two. My mom had two corollas. A 1994 and later a 2001 model. They had about R130000 on the clock and still on the first cluth. The cars never skipped any service intervals and gave no problems of any sort. She has a Avanza now and so far its the same story....everything keeps going right, Toyota.

I know of people with Honda and its pretty much the same story. I personally would go for the Honda. I'm a car freak and the Honda is the more performance orienated car. The toyota is more of a cruiser.

The JD Power results also show Honda is king so there is another good reason.

Like I said, cant go wrong with any of them. Just choose what type of driving you like and which of the cars offer the best goodies for money.

Owned both and definitely preferred Honda.

My mom's Conquest has 487000 K's on the clock and never been properly looked after. Still gets 14 to 16 ks per liter.
What Conquest manages to get that? And without proper maintenance.

Mom's Conquest in a '95 model. I'm assuming your assumption on quality is based purely on you owning a Honda? What makes you think there is a problem with Toyota quality? My Corolla is 6 years old now and I've replaced 1 head light bulb. My wifes '91 Corolla has 160000Ks on the clock and that still runs like a dream. My father-in-law's Land Cruiser (180 000Ks) still runs like a dream after 7 years and that gets badly abused at least twice a year on our "boys trips" into Africa. I won't even start to mention the two Lexii in the family or the Hilux which also goes north of the boarder every year. So how is the quality of any of these cars below that of any Honda? Surely if the quality wasn't any good the reliability would suffer?

My 120K service on my Corolla was about R3000. Roughly half the price of 1 BM X5 tyre.

My mother's one. Which was originally my dad's and I "owned" it for a few years too. Maybe we have been lucky with that one. But just have a look around at how many "chissel back" conquests, old corollas and even Cresidas are still on the road. I'm not even going to mention all the taxis.

Everything keeps going right. TOYOTA! (The Civic still looks nicer though.)

Then Mine wasn't too bad. What exactly was done on the Toyota?

Honda service was roughly as follows:

(Ex tax)
Labour R1665.00 -> R444 of which was for Aircon
Sundries R303.50
Parts R1000.05

Mentioned on invoice:
- Completed Aircon Service
- Handbrake adjusted
- Replaced gearbox oil
- Topped up fluids
- Checked all lights
- Suspension - no faults
- No leaks
- No faults

I did the brakes myself - They would charge roughly R900 front and R900 rear for brakes :/

You sure an X5 tyre is R6000?

My mom has both the Touareg V10 and bought an X5 a few months ago. The Touareg is R4500 and we assumed similar for the X5 :/

What makes you think there is a problem with Toyota quality

Our primary business group has a fleet of over 200 vehicles, i dont make judgement from one car. Now when i talk quality, im not talking about engine, transmission, drivetrain etc. im talking interior quality, it is far inferior to Honda.

Im pretty sure OP needs to know this ? or is OP not worried about interior parts breaking and is entertained by the sound of *rattles* ...

Honda! Honda! Honda! Toyota is oh so conservative and boring, very solid vehicles, make no mistake but with absolutely no charisma what so ever!!

Honda on the other hand make incredibly reliable vehicles and they get pretty original from time to time with design etc Not to mention their bullet proof engines... Apparently Honda has never ever had a warranty claim made for a blown engine and considering they make more engines than any other manufacturer in the world...

In SA Honda is a mickey mouse brand and close to insignificant compared to Toyota but internationally it's a different story...

If you're gonna go Jap, Honda. Friend of mine clocked 315,000km on a little 1.5 motor in a Honda Civic. Never opened. Those things are indestructible little cars. His car is still running by the way.

Did a lot of window shopping over the weekend & I have Toyota Verso or Honda Civic to decide on.
Haven't test drove them yet.

I have a feeling the Honda will take it. :)

Someone once said, "Driving a white Toyota Corolla says to the world "I have absolutely no character". :D
