Hoorah for self-install

Im still weighing up whether to fold and just get do1 with self install or wait for the beloved Neotel. Judging by my university usage using their high speed connections I seriously doubt 1 Gig would last a full month. And the whole point of broadband is to pay for the month once off and forget about it, not have to constantly monitor how many bytes in and out.

Beloved? What have they done to make you love them thus far?

Neotel or no neotel - I think it will be a long time before we can stop having to worry about each and every byte.

Sarcasm bwana, thats exactly the point that the consumer has seen NOTHING TANGIBLE from them so far, only signups for trials and interviews with media.

telkom has improved ever so sligtly... not enough yet. adsl is still more stable than wireless

1GB/30= 34MB per day

good luck with that!

I saw this at the bottom of a Telkom Do Broadband ad:

"Self-installation cannot be guaranteed and is only available until the 31st of August 2007"

Why on earth would they go back to Telkom-only installation when self-installation seems to be working?

Thank goodness ADSL is such a mature, solid technology ... otherwise all their staff cuts would really be biting us in the anterior :D.

What about the free-modem that you get when you do a self-install from Telkom Mr Writer? Or did they forget to mention that...

7 days my @ss... why oh why did i ever try to do a self-install conversion from isdn... :( 2.5 months and counting now

I spoke to someone at Telkom today and he told me that they are no longer continuing with self-install as from the end of MAY!!!

My conversion from a normal line to an adsl line took about a week on SIO

I finaly folded after modeming for the last 15 years. Did the self install and it took a week for me too..or was it 7 working days? It was pretty smooth too I hate to admit. I got lots of follow up calls. Free Mega 100 wireless (pretty noisy tho...must be a fan or somthing in it) and no contracts re 24 months. One hiccup activating the line and a lengthy wait for support. (Im in CPT Southern suburbs, Muizenberg)

I also went for the adsl self install option. Within 4 days I received a call from telkom saying that my line have been setup and that I can collect my “free” modem from a telkom shop. But at the end of the month when I got my bill they had charged me for the modem. I have called telkom and they said that the self-install offer does include a free modem. But I am still having trouble convincing the account department at telkom of this.

I view the day that my ISDN to ADSL (self-install) conversion order completes with a mixture of trepidation and anticipated relief. Relief that it will be over (for now) and that I don’t have to count how many minutes I spend connected to the net but trepidation due to the interesting items I am sure we will be erroneously and unfairly billed for when we receive the bill!

Good to know I did this myself 4 years ago ... for R400.00. Thanks Telkom. Obviously now that the common sense has set in (whereby it's not about sucking every inch of blood out of each step within the process) they see more money to be made from actual subscribers. Happy for others, at least they are able to avoid that disgusting 'engineer' cost and simply allow (for eg) Netgear to simply do its thing. Router + filter + auto config. Some hard work there indeed for myself with Mr Engineer eating his lunch and drinking my tea while the wheels within Telkom accounts keep turning.

As I said before, Telkom are scrapping the self-installation. I am moving in July and I am trying to avoid some clown coming round drinking my tea just so he can plug my modem in to the phone socket. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing his face when I present him with my Apple Powerbook.

But I have been told the end of May is the end of self-installation. The Telkom engineers obviously have too much time on their hands!

paint: wtf? your kidding!! Why on earth would telkom scrap the self-install option? Aren't they signing up many more customers now with the self install option than before? I"m also moving at the end of May

I was told by the Telkom sales rep at my local Telkom shop that I had to put the ADSL order in this month to have the option of self-install. I guess I should double check - you know how confused Telkom gets!! So if it is true, then try to put in the order for ADSL at your new place before you move in. That's what I'm doing.
