At this point I am very very frustrated with my current host. I have 11 domains hosted with them on a reseller account and I'm just very frustrated at how frequently they are down. As I write this post, they are down again and all 11 domains are inaccessible. This by the way is a host that many of you here highly recommend!

I am seriously thinking about moving all my domains to a host overseas. Can anyone comment on your experiences with Hostgator?

Who are you hosting with now?

There's a lot of local hosts that are much more capable than what your current one is, apparently.

I don't want to name and shame honestly. The support guys are friendly and respond quickly to my requests but at the end of the day I'm not happy if my sites are down regularly.

HG have a very good reputation. If you're happy hosting your sites in the US (slower latency), then you can't go too wrong.

Budget I guess would be max. R250 at this point.

ouch, never so much. I pay $5pm for 20gb SSD, 1TB bandwidth 512mb server

Local try elitehost(only had good service from them and local)

Otherwise Hetzner is on top on servers if you don't mind spending a bit more

Hostgator offers the best uptime and quality hosting services. I do not think there is a hosting provider that will beat them. They also probably offers the best support service anywhere in the world.

They have been in the game for a very long time and they already host about 6% of the total Internet (if not more than that by now).

They are highly recommended.

OP.

I would not recommend moving your servers overseas.... When seacom has problems, having no international means no site, nor email. (though this has not happened for awhile, no email for 5+ days is not fun)

Look at other hosting, Gridhost, or even your ISP. Most, if not all ISPs, host sites.

Hostgator support is pretty terrible. Its always available, but wow, their support staff are unskilled.

I wouldnt listen to this advice. SEACOM is not the only cable and almost all ISPs have redundancy. Local datacenters go down more often than SEACOM any ways.

Hosting in EU datacenters on 200ms is fine for 99% of what you need hosted.

We need to start at looking to better local hosting. ZA is not excluded from the hosting world, I understand the pricing may or may not be a tricky subject for local hosts but margin can be made everywhere. Local business looking to host outside the country just puts a bad taste in my eyes. Sure there is a local provider that can compete.

As for international cables... Eh... SEACOM, SAT3, WACS

Firstly, I sincerely hope your eyes can't taste.
Secondly, I don't see why it should leave a bad taste. That's like saying you're left with a bad taste when a local clothing store imports their clothing rather than using local manufacturers.
If the hosting is fast, reliable and more affordable, what's the difference?

Completely agree.

i have been with HG since 2006, first as a re-seller and now on one of their VPS.

Once I have had a problem that they could not immediately solve, but was solved eventually. The experience was not bad enough to cause me to look for a different hosting provider. I still recommend them every chance I get.

Go for it.

If you use coupon code PhillyD you get 25% off or your first month free.

I can honestly say I am happy with HG.

Good value for money and support has been phenomenal to date.

Their service is good in the sense that it is way better than most South African hosting companies... Not that i have ever hosted with any... I just always here about this and that server is down again and again plenty times every year.

So if you want quality service and affordability... Try HostGator!

Lol at the seacom comments, you guys must have not heard that seacom was down for quite a while this year? Not that you would have noticed considering the fact that most networks were unaffected.

I have an issue with Hostgator at the moment

Activated a site with them on Tuesday - everything showed fine until Wednesday evening
My site just showed Account Suspended in the url bar
Then got email that I have to verify myself and credit card before my site will be active again. Have to scan a doc with photo ( passport, ID or drivers) and credit card used to pay them - can block out all the numbers except for last four.
At first I thought it was a scam, but after googling it seems legit - only for users outside of USA.

I have replied to them on Wednesday and still nothing yet - my account is still suspended. I know it is Thanxgiving weekend and not expecting a reply soon.

Just wished they were up front with that info before I paid for a year :-(
