Hi
So I'm weighing up the pro's and con's of the various hosting options out there and I'm at deadlock. Would someone please add some insightful advise ?
I looked at various dedicated server plans and it seems to range from $100 - $500 per month for an average system. The problem I have is that if I take say a $500p/m plan for a year, and when the year is finished and cancel my contact i have nothing to show for it (ie, its not like paying off a car, where you own the car afterwards). Also, I need windoze 2008 server and sql server and that adds to your monthly fee. the problem is that those software packages stay in possession of the hosting company even though you pay for it.
So I thought, okay, say I buy a server and then just pop it into a datacenter and then I just have to pay bandwidth and management fees. the price overall might be higher, but then at least I own a server at the end of the day
So I phoned MWEB and they ask about R350 p/m for 1u and 5gb traffic. Now 5gb is not alot of bw, so I thought of hosting overseas(where the bandwidth flows freely). So i looked up some hosting providers but most of them only provided dedicated hosting at a fixed rate and the server and software is theirs. the one that offered colocation could give me the rack space but not the server.
So my question is as follows: Is there some way of buying a server overseas(say 'merica) and have it hosted there ? that way I can buy the server there(a once-off expense, and probably cheaper than buying it in SA) and then just pay for the rackspace?
obviously I dont have the funds to fly over there to buy the server myself, so then I could perhaps buy it through the hosting provider?
does anyone have experience/advise with this?
Thanks
