I'm looking at hosting with GoDaddy, because there is just nothing else that can match their price for what you get.

I'm looking at windows hosting specfically ... .Net Framework 4 and MS SQL.

Does anyone know how the contracts work? If you take a 12 month contract, do you pay upfront to get the saving? Or do you still pay monthly? How do you cancel out of the contract then?
If you for example take the Economy plan, how difficult is it to upgrade to the Deluxe plan?

Any pros/cons feedback w.r.t. Godaddy welcome as well.

The hosting is for nothing major ... just playing around.

Thanks

Hmmm ... their page looks almost exactly the same as http://www.bluehost.com/.

And similar to Bluehost, I cannot see their Windows hosting packages to see what version of .Net Framework they support and how many MS SQL databases you get.

Any reason why you would want to host abroad ?

Rather pay a bit more and get quality hosting, there is a lot of really good windows hosting companies in SA

Simple ... looking at your pricing structures for hosting I would have to pay R149.99 for a MS SQL database + the Hosting package cost.
Using GoDaddy, I can take the R105 Unlimited hosting option which would give me unlimited MS SQL databases.

Sorry, didn't mean to be nasty, sounds a bit like it after reading again.

Was just trying to make a comparison. Because that is what you'll be paying with most local hosting providers.

http://www.servergrid.net looks decent, but still a little more expensive than Godaddy. So I guess it will come down to who has had better experience with which of the two?

Godaddy.com? or godaddy.co.za... because the latter isn't godaddy at all.

:wtf::wtf:

Send us a url please mate.

I've had minimal dealings with them, but they have a reputation for horrible customer service. Cheap isn't always better.

As for pricing, the biggest discount requires pre-paying. You are locked into the contract period. These are fair, and many other hosting companies work the same way.

Firstly, Godaddy is probably one of the world's top 3 hosting providers. I know they are the world's biggest domain registrar, so I would expect delays in customer services.

Secondly, I think the main reason people are going for hosting abroad is the cost-effectiveness. I know that Godaddy is cheap and they do offer great hosting services. No South African company can compare to the companies abroad - not in price, infrastructure, or anything else.

Where the majority of webmasters realize that hosting abroad is the answer, is when their websites expand. Having a small website with little traffic is fine to host locally. But, once your traffic increase and bandwidth usage picks up very few websites can afford local hosting. I have about 7 sites that currently utilize more than 4GB bandwidth per day. Had I hosted them locally I would have closed them down already. The four sites only cost me around R200 per month abroad.

Hopefully our hosting prices will come down in future and things like bandwidth offerings and disk space will increase. Once I find a local hosting provider willing to ask me R80 a month for at least 4GB disk space and around 200GB bandwidth a month, I will come back with all my websites.

Unfortunately that is the reality.

I remember once hearing their hosting was not that great. I prefer using Hostgator.com

No offense taken

I must say godaddy is not known for their great support rather for how big they are

If you wanna go abroad go to hostgator.com

Otherwise look at www.afrihost.co.za for local or I think a new company (Or rather I think they new) Host 4 Africa heard they not bad

I hate GoDaddy hosting, had endless problems with them. Dreamhost is by far the better option
